my dad was thinking of getting a car from his friend who wants to get a new car.

the mileage is low, but i think its about 10 yrs liao. haha.

the friend would most probably be getting scrap value for the car, so my dad thinks that it would be a good idea to get it from him direct and pay him the scrap value lohz.

what do you guys think? =)

2nd hand car = higher maintenance, and a car over 10 years is only covered by insurance for fire, and correct me if i'm wrong, you've gotta pay more for the insurance.

COE just went down, a sunny will cost nothing more than 48k.

when prices of cars goes down, no one buys 2nd hand...

Cons of 2nd hand car at this point:-

Risk of getting problematic car

Higher maintenance cost

Higher fuel consumption

Higher roadtax

Higher interest rate.

Pros of 2nd hand car

Cheap capital cost, therefore low capital loan

Won't heartache should the car get scratched

Probably really "Made in Japan" (assuming it's a japanese car)

If you are simply looking for a transport from Pt A to Pt B, and the 2nd car is from a reliable source (i.e car is in really good condition), and you don't want to get a lot of loan, then you can consider that. You do the math. :D

I would think it is still a lot better to get a new car b'cos of the warranty etc.

Even a small car is way better than a 2nd hand one, especially a 10 years old car.

My uncle used to own a good 2nd hand car .. after the magic "10" come in, a lot of problem start to appear, especially the aircon.

Depends on whom you buy the car from la..Some cars like NISSAN sunnys are better in metal and stuff, newer car not that strong.Car crash big damage.

what car your dad is buying makes quite a difference

reliable cars like merc etc even after 10yr require relatively less maintainence

but note..the word is relatively...old cars always need a lot of care...and you can't mistreat them like you can with new cars...aircon gearbox electronics dynamo all will have problems as your car ages...its probably worth your while fixing the car compared to buying a brand new car but its more of the hassle of having to bring the car to fix and waiting for it to return that would turn most people off
