how much sand to put in a 2ft and 5ft tank

hi everyone. does anyone know how manay cm of sand should i put inmy new 2ft and coming 5ft tank...i heard people saying that i have to put about 5cm os sand for my 5ft tank...is it true? what is the difference of putting small amount and huge amount of sand?
