I just started a new 2 Ft tank. I know a lot of you uses wavemakers etc, but I am currently using a regular fish pump from a filter (linking to under the sand bed). Realise that my tank smells fishy (using nsw). Is this normal? How can I improve on my setup?

Hi, I have under gravel filter too but removed them within the 1st week on advice by friends here.

Suggest you do the same fast.

yea all the scum and dirt will get trapped in your gravel and it is not a pretty sight. especially with corals -> if you're a beginner you might be amazed at how much mucus they can spew, especially things like dying mushrooms.

getting activated carbon into ur tank filtration should help remove most of the smell. it will also increase ur water clarity too ; )

maybe u shld get a power filter or cannister or even better a sump for ur filtration.

Thanks all for your advice. I am a beginner, so really appreciate. In terms of food and the minerals, am I missing out anything? Once again I am using NSW.

Hi, you gonna hear alot from the 'experts'. Sometimes, the advice are just one's preference not necessary the ultimate must do.

My few months into marine tank teach me to observe and read more of what others have to say.

Not everything is a must but certain things are good to have. If you have a basic system, it does work just that you need to spend a bit more time maintaining the tank.

Yours is a 2 ft tank, if you keep it simple, you don't need all the skimmer, wave pump, sump, etc. Of course if you want to have big fishes, coral, anemone, etc, you need more equipment to sustain the environment.

Yep, so far the advice I have read is for me to get a protein skimmer and to do regular water change as mine is a under gravel filtration system.

Skimmer is a MUST have IMO, i suggest get a better one to start off with.

i agree with bro sotong. unless u are willing to do water change weekly, if not u will soon see a layer of brownish stuff on the surface of the water and the chances of your water parameters screwing up is pretty high
