hi everyone...

i am thinking of setting up a 1ft cube with a canister filter and normal light...

will be keeping a pair of Harlequin shrimps and afew other cleaner shimp...

do i need to get a skimmer or can i do without it???

Cannister maybe too strong current for your 1ft set up. I wld suggest a hang on filter will do.

If you want to do w/o skimmer, then you can change some of the water weekly. (Maybe 20%??)

the red sea prizm will be a fine addition for a one feet cube

it requires the pump to be inside the water only right???

wat is your budget for a skimmer? you can consider getting 2nd hand prizm skimmer from the market place. Some times, you can actually get a decent deal. =)

its about 100 plus which is way over my budget by twice...

alternatively u can look for hang on filters with the skimmer built in it. i think its quite essential to have a skimmer IMO

i am trying to look for one which does not need me to put a powerhead pump inside the tank itself casue if thats teh case i might as well get the cheap weipro 2011...

is there any that does not need the pump to be inside the tank???

u can get those air driven skimmers.. cost less than 10 bucks if i am not wrong

Surprisingly, air stone driven skimmers work pretty well for small aquariums. We are using 1 such skimmer salvaged from a thrown away tank and using it for our office tank. It produces plenty of skimmate without a pump to heat up the water.
