hi bro/sis,

i bought a digital thermometer today. when i put in the thermometer, it was at first at 32 then after awhile, it became 31. the best part was that the wheather was rather cooling and it was raining. now it is at 30.5.

could it be the thermometer or the water is really that hot??

if i get a fan would it be good enough??

is this the reason y my hermits always go to the sand bed and stay at a place not moving as if it is dead??

Heat transfer from your return pump. Last time when I don't have chiller, the water temperature can until 33 deg C even.

Yes... equipments... they can release a lot of heat especially those high power consumption pumps... lighting too. The general guide is... the higher the power consumption... the more heat it will generate A chiller will be the ultimate answer to your problem as the issue now is not just to cool down the water, but to maintain at a marginal range.

A functional chiller will be able to sustain a temperature within a 1ºC range, say... 27ºC to 28ºC. Now that's optimum as no matter what's ur un-aircon room temperature... the tank water will always remain within that range.

A fan will not allow your fishes/corals that kinda comfort... however, using a timer and activate the fan during day time (or lighting hours) will help in the short term.

all bro for replying. i no i need a chiller am saving for one. currently i do not have any fish in my tank should i start adding life stock or wait til i get a chiller?? i have got a fan but don seem to be doing much work. any ways

Having a chiller has many advantages. BUT it's NOT a must to have chiller to keep fishes and corals. l'm sure many of us here do not use chillers at all. A fan will do just fine, the main thing to manage is evaporation rate which is higher and require frequent water top up.

It really depends on yr budget and whether you are having a reef tank or FOWLR; equipment use such as pumps & lightings; the ambient temp; placement of yr tank etc.

l dun have a chiller but my fishes, inverts and corals are doing ok for over a year now. For me, my fan will be on when the lights are on. My tank temp is ard 29-30 on average.

when i on my fan the temp onli drop by 0.7 degrees max. now my average temp is 30~31. i donno about yrs but my 2 hermit seem to be sweating in my tank. when they first came they where moving about for the 1st 2 days but after that it jus stay on the sand bed not moving. if i move it up on a rock within a min it wil jus scramble it way down to the sand bed again. it may be due to the heat as i presume the water on top is all hot while the water bellow is much cooler like the oean. but either way i think they are suffering.

i don think it is the pump or lights causing heat. i offed the filter and skimmer for 5 min jus now. instead of temp going down it went up. by 1 degree. now when i off my fan it is 30.9 and when i on it, it is 30.1 i thought fans would drop the temp by 2 degrees or so??

how do u place ur fan? it should be faing about 45 degress blowing at the water

Temp may take some time to stabilize. So a change in 1 deg is not unusual. Anyway those cheap digital thermometers are not accurate. I used to have 1 and it would read a temp that is 2 deg lower than my chiller thermostat.

It may not be the temp problem. Other water parameters also play a major role. Yr tank fully cycled already as it seems fairly new to me? As long as they're feeding well and active, i think the hermits are fine whether they're at the top or bottom.

As for cooling capability by fan, it all depends on how big is yr fan, placement of yr fan, duration you turn on the fan, and the size of yr tank etc.

Oh yes, i agree with bro thexder that some digital thermometers can be fairly inaccurate too.

thanks guys. but how do u see if they aar feeding weel?? my tank is 2x1x1 the fan is place propperly. my fan is not the fan for the fish tank is a normal fan. it is about 1 feet in length. is it the same as the fan u guys are talking about?? if the temp is reading lower then it suppose to wont it make me tank hotter?? or are u saying +/- 2 degree?? it should be ready close to 5 weeks of cycling. just afraid to add fishes afraid they would die. as last time i thought water bought from shop is ready for fishes to put in right away causing all to die. do hermit eat their mottings?? cause there is this hermit stay under the rock 2 to 3 days nvr move around. but cannot find the motting any where. now it is moving around. but the other one jus stay at the back left hand corner not moving around. would hermit cause armonia spike??

Few years back I have a 2 feet tank same as yours, my temp problem was exactly same as yours too. It is impossible to bring temp down to 27 DC without chiller. Mine was about 30 to 32 DC then. I would not suggest you to get live stock till you get a chiller, but the survival rate of live stocks are still high even though the temp is 30 - 31 DC. Try not to get invert/corals, they won't survive well in high temp. Hermit won't cause NH3 spike, unless you throw in really a lot of food and they were left uneaten. How many powerheads are you using for your current tank? A cooling fan is only capable to reduce temp for 2 to 4 DC, but be aware that for a 2 by 1 by 1, the evaporation rate is super high. I would strongly suggest not to use a cooling fan, unless you have RO/DI unit at home, if not constantly top up of evaporated water with tap water will cause your water quality to reduce. By the term feeding well meaning when your throw a small piece of shrimp down to the front of the hermit, it will grab and eat instead of ignoring the food. But of course if your whole thongs appear in front of the hermit, it will hide or run away, best is to let it sink down by itself.
