Skimmer and Chiller on the same pump?

Hi all,

I was thinking of the above idea, as it would have the following advantages if it worked:

-Lower power consumption (use 1x efficient pump instead of 2 smaller ones)

-Better skimming (good external skimmer vs limited small internal ones)

-Works around the fact that the JBJ 24G has only 1 hole each for hose in/out

So basically you have a single pump (calculated for skimmer flow requirements + chiller flow, also gravity due to chiller being below tank) that will split into both devices and there will be a flow control valve to control water flow into the chiller. This will control the ratio of water flow going into chiller/skimmer.

Here's a simple pictorial of it.. Comments? Do you guys think it'll work?

it really depends on the skimmer you are using.....if ventri based or Beckett type you can't....if those skimmer with a seperate feed pump (like some needle wheel) or air stone, you might be able to......bear in mind that the water pass through coil within the chiller thus you will have some head loss.....

your picture also got some problem.....if not set up correctly, when there is a power failure, water might acutally drain out of the skimmer....
