Hi nice folks :)

Anyone can help ID the below? Started seeing a few colonies popping out of my live rocks today:

Are they safe for my tank?

Looks like a Majano Anemone.

Looks like a Majano Anemone.

http://www.wetwebmedia.com/anemoniafaqs.htm

http://www.knowledgegalaxy.net/majano_anemone/majano_anemone.html

The Majano Problem - The problem the majano anemone presents is that while by itself it appears to be a rather docile creature, minding its own business, it has a disturbing tendency to divide and conquer. In other words it is extremely invasive. One can have an attractive saltwater aquarium, complete with a coral reef and a majano anemone or two, and before long, everything is covered with the anemone. So, it's little wonder that it is an undesirable creature to have. Not only undesirable, but in the view of many, very difficult to bring under control or get rid of.

doesn't look like majano anemone. looks like goniopora. And yes, you can get free gonios from liverock.

jxlex, when the polyps close, does it retract into a hard calcerous skeleton? if no, then it rules out goniopora.

Ya.. probably.. best way to confirm whether is it Goniopara is to count the tentacles first.. is it 24 of them on a polyps.... If yes then check what Lemon suggested...

I tried zoom out your pics this afternoon.. I counted only less than 20 tentacles.... therefore, most likely not Gonio..

Try close up pics may helps....

Cheers and Happy Reefing...

Thanks for the reply. WHen i try to touch them, they retract into the hole... i dunno how to recognise if skeleton or not...

Any pattern on the hole?? Ple refer to pics attached below when gonio flow bloom, half close and retracted...

In fact, you can see some tentacles pattern on the hole surfaces/skeleton.. it is 24 line as well...

The second pic you posted looks like gonio polyps, if they really do retract into a "hole" then it is probably a skeleton. Majano and Aiptasia don't have skeletons, they are soft corals like other anemones and sort of ball up or curl when retracted.

My 24G nano tank (Decommed)

I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate.

And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.
