Cannister or Hang on the Back filter

hi to all bro and sis

After many years in freshwater world, finally plan to go into the darkside of marine. ( hahaha, told by other)

but i am limited as i can only spent around 100+ for the whole setup. So i going to reuse my 24' x 12' x 18' tank with 6mm thickness for the first time.

With that amount of money i cannot get a sump tank, and the tank is too small to DIY into a IOS tank.

So went down to Yishun fish shop to check out what i can get and was told i can use a cannister for my nano tank ( FOWLR ).

Problem is,

i can get a cannister (cheap ones) but what is the flow rate i should look out for?

Or can i use a HOB filiter for a nano tank like that?

Do i need a skimmer? (after reading, i think all will say YES),But what model should i get for that small tank?

Sorry, really new into marine.

Based on your tank size(about 81 liters), you can opt for a HOB filter for easier maintenance. There are lots to choose from at places like C328. Try to pick one that has a built-in surface skimmer.

However, a HOB filter is hardly going to move sufficient volume of your 81L marine FOWLR. So, you might need to also get a wave maker.

Live rocks can play a part to help with biological filtration, but make sure base glass is well supported, & don't rest the rocks against your thin 6mm vertical pieces.

Lastly, a HOB protein skimmer will play a big part to maintain water quality if you do not plan to do water changes every few days.

That's about it.

For your tank a canister would be good enough preferably a better one since its the main system

you can connect a surface skimmer to the inlet of the canister

while you can get the red sea prism skimmer for the skim job no need the deluxe model since you have a surface skimmer on the inlet of the canister

Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever.

yea, given your budget, a canister is better for filtration as you have no sump, get a hang on skimmer + canister and one month of cycling, you can start to stock slowly.. (not all at once and not too many tangs in your fish tank unless you change water very frequently and suck poo daily)

all the best!

Bro.. I started my marine tank a year ago just like u. With a 2x1x1 tank I started a fowler tank with just C1 sand and 2 big LR. For my filter

, I bought a filter with a build in skimmer from yishun fish shop. Its a boyu protein skimmer. Cost me $28. Might fit ur budget.. :)

Hi,

I run my tank with canister for 2x1x1 plus skimmer for keeping LPS. I think a canister will be a better choice as you can put diff types of medium in the canister and the volume is definitely larger. With tt i think you can also stock a little more. Skimmer IMHO is not a must in a fowlr tank.

Hey,

I started off with a canister (22w) for my 2x1x1.5, it worked quite well but contributed to heating water, changed to a wavemaker the situation improved.

You might want to take that into consideration if you're planning to keep corals.

Cheers.

Yes, I also agree with Ingwe about a canister pump contributing more heat into your water. But it'll probably be ok if you're planning for a chiller. Get a thermometer to keep track of your water temperature.

U definitely gonna up your budget as 100+ is confirm not enough.

For me I'll get a good powerful cannister filter.

Skimmer is a must!

Some1 doesn't 1 2 do anything find an excuse,some1 1 2 do something find a mean!
