bro, most of the time.. moorish idol wont last long in man made aquarium. unless you are really lucky that can get one that is already feeding (higher chance) but the % of it surviving is quite low..

I second Onizuka's views.

Never wanted to even think about keeping a MI until I came across what I thought was a really nice specimen which was already feeding on pellets and mysis.

Gave in to temptation after seeing it feed at the LFS and it was fine throughout its 2.5 week stay in my tank - no ich, no spots, eating healthily and swimming happily. Just died for no rhyme or reason without warning one fine day. It was feeding happily just the day before.

Apparently I read somewhere that there is something in the MI's natural diet that cannot be replicated by reefkeepers.

Yet.

So I'd advise you to give up on the idea of keeping a MI. Unlikely to survive.

Kept one for 9 months before. One fine day die even feeding on EVERyThInG. Ate my candy cane and GSP

wow 9 mths.. thats quite long .. and gsp it will eat??

alamak my tank got gsp haha... so maybe me have to scrap the idea of keeping it.. hehe

If its main diet is GSP I believe a lot of reefers wouldnt mind keeping one the thing now is that it does not do well in a home aquaria so even if after having it feed on readily made available food doesnt show that you are successful because it will die sonner or later...

just coz it eat GSP in my tank doesn't mean all MI eat GSP.

individual fish individual preference. some may not even eat any corals.

but i dun suggest keeping it. coz it will die sooner or later and i don't think you want to live everyday of your life wondering when it will die.

Well. I've witnessed a MI munching a reefer's dragon-eye zoas.

While we watched, it just finished up that few polyps..

But even then MI just doesn't survive long in captivity.

Try it, then share with us ur experience?

I have kept 1 for around 2 years before selling away.

My 2 cents:

1. Buy MI only if they are feeding.
   
2. MI need varied diet and tank that have lush macro algae and sponge will provides the necessary.
   
3. Once established, MI can be one of the more agressive fish in your tank!
   
4. MI will not tolerate any introduction laterally compressed fish such as tangs, rabbits, angels etc.
   
5. Will peck on clams, fan worms, sponge, some soft corals and some lps.
   

Personally, I dun think I will keep them in a community reef.

Ha ha wow 2 years is long.. Ok since my tank is a community tank me think me won't keep it he he...
