Things to look out for:

1. Macro shot - try gettiing those that can take shots at very close range - 2-5cm better. Mine is 20cm.... :( assuming you will want to have close up shots of your "darlings"..

2. 3.2 to 4 Mega pixel should be good enough.

Think Sony and Canon are good enough for most users.

Good luck!

I am using Cannon Ixus V2.

Macro is 10 cm. Optical zoom is 2x. Dont bother about digital zoom.

Only 2 MB but I think it is good enough. I have tried developing 4R photos and it is film quality. You can see sample at Sample.

Best of all is it pocket size.

Depends on usage.

If you like to have many Xs of optical zoom, there is a Pansonic

model (DMC-FZ2) that comes with 12x optical zoom. But it is oni 2.1M pixels.

If you don't mind a 2nd hand DC, you can try getting a Canon G3.

Go to the below link on review and comparsion of DC.

IMO, you can easily get a 3 MegaPixel camera with zoom from either Canon and/or Olympus that will sit comfortably within your budget.

Also, these two brands are by far the easiest to start with for beginners.

Try to refrain from Nikon or Fuji until and unless you are looking for some special features.

The slim types you see usually advertised on TV no doubt look nice and are very handy to carry around but you need a very steady hand to operate the functions and while taking pictures as they are no ergonomically designed. Most of your zoom shots will not turn out nice.

For your consideration

Well what I got is a cannon A70 Camera. a 16MB Compact Flash (Which you can get a replace at the stores above SLS for around $90 at 256M).

A Hand Strap, 4 AA Batteries and that's it.

Best to get those GP rechargable batteries as has tested and it is better that normal AA Batteries.

Warranty is 1 Year I think, have not really look into the warrenty part.

Belive that buying Equipment is lucky or unlucky.
