Choosing a Chiller

Recommended Posts

Hi to alll bro and sis,

I am new to this hobby as plan to have a chiller for my 15gal tank + 5 gal sump. I have been searching some information for choosing a chiller which suit for my tank. Most of the recommendations are suggested me to get 1/15HP chiller.

If i get a over-rated chiller such as 1/2 HP or 1/5 HP chiller for my tank? What is the pros and cons ? Thanks for your precious commends and advices.

over rated still ok as the cooling time will be very fast, con is louder but also depend on model for budget range around 500-700 you can get a hailea 1/2HP already.

so seen your tank is small you can choose a stronger pump like 7000L/h and above pump for your chiller and route it to your main tank as return..

this will help u to reduce power consumption and money in long term

Welcome to this hobby. Oversizing is fine but for yr small setup, u will have limitation due to pump size, piping, current, etc. I have one 24 gallon nano and using 1/15 artica. Doing fine. Problem I faced was the pump. Due to space constraint, not many small pump can generate above 3000 l/h and small enough ro fit in the available space. Landed with rio. Due to many elbow and uv installation, the output is just nice. FYI.

Thanks for all the advices. About the noise issue, this is one of my main concern as I set my tank in my living room. Won't be nice when watching movie :pinch: I did understand about the shorter time frame for oversized chiller to cool down the temperature of my small tank. Will this cause stress to my reefs as suddenly temperature change in short period?
