Another FW convert

Hi All,

Would like some advise and recommendations from the brothers and sisters here.

Firstly, I've had experience in FW and would like to take the plunge and try marine. I've already ordered my 45cm (90L) cube and planning for the equipment. Tank is going to be FOWLR with the possibility of easy corals in the future (no intention to run a chiller). Looking at running a Fluval C4 HOB (rated at 1000L/H) and a RO BH1000 HOB skimmer.

Due to the size of the tank, was wondering if I still need to run a wave maker. Will also get a set of led lights for the tank. Anything else I might have missed out?

Also, to kick start the tank for cycling, any recommendations for what quick start bacteria to dose? Thanks in advance

Hi bro , since it's FOWLR , u missed out the LR . :)

Suggest u go for sump setup.

Can hide the equipments and build a Refugium:)

Not going for sump for this tank as I need to move it in about 6 months time. This project is for me to get aquainted to marine and my next tank will be a 3x2x1.5 with sump.

Will get a aquaroche scape from Iwarna and also supplement it with some LR.

Update:

Tank is finally here. And I have narrowed down to the following setup:

Tank size: 45cm cube (8mm)

Mechanical filtration: Fluval C4 HOB

Protein Skimmer: RO BH1000 HOB

Wave maker: Tunze Nanostream 6025

Substrate: Caribsea Arag - Fiji Pink

Salt mix: Skimz Pur Reef

Test kits: Salifert (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate)

Lighting: haven't decided (budget $200, any recommendations? Have to be LEDs though)

Live Rocks: probably from one of the Pasir Ris LFS (planning to get an Aquaroche scape from Iwarna so how much LR should I get now in order not to clutter the tank up?)

Any comments/feedback much appreciated.

Now tearing down one of my FW tank to use back the stand and also collecting gear. Hopefully, can start cycling by this weekend.

If anyone is planning to decomm, and have some of the stuff listed above to clear, please let me know. Also looking for a refractometer

Bro, since you are not keeping coral, then lighting not so bad.

I was using aquazonic superbright extendable marine type. Cost about 60plus for 50cm at c328 (since u would be very familiar with FW lfs). Once u get ur bigger tank, you may want to invest in maxspect or AI hydra if not wrong. These LED will gives u good control over light intensity and in case u want to keep coral, they will bring out the color of ur coral better due to the control u have.

Thanks. Will check out c328 or seaview since it's closer for the lighset. Just Artinic will do right?

For the time being since you are upgrading in 6mths and it's fowlr, imho I find actinic and white is better for a balance. Some fish looks nice in actinic.

Anw, good choice for bh1000. Despite being huge, it's really awesome!!!!

While sourcing for the BH1000, i noticed that there was a shop showing the skimmer as powered by Hailea OTP pump while another describes the pump as a Octopus OTP 1000 needle wheel pump.

My question are they both the same pumps? The one that mentions Hailea is $10 cheaper. I'm just wondering if the pump was changed to lower the cost or the octopus OTP 1000 needle wheel is actually a Hailea OEM pump..

I've got another question, would it be better to get 2x Tunze 6015 (1800L/hr) wavemakers or 1x Tunze 6025 (2500L/hr)/6045? With 2 WM, it will be easier to position the flows with maximum coverage without causing the tank to be a washing machine whereas getting a bigger WM will only allow a single flow direction. The cons would be 2 WM takes up more real estate in the already small nano tank. TIA.

  • 3 weeks later...
  • SRC Member

It's been 3 weeks since the tank arrived and I've used the time to get all the gear and equipment ready.

Finally going to start cycling the coming weekend.

For the cycling process, I'm planning to start with NSW and gradually dilute the NSW with salt mix during WC.

Gonna help kick start the cycle using prodibio start up and Caribsea live sand.

Equipment as follows:

Tank size- 45cm cube

Mechanical filtration- Fluval C4 HOB

Skimmer- Reef Octopus BH1000 HOB

Substrate- Caribsea live sand (Hawaiian Black) - no stock of Fiji pink :(

Wavemaker- Tunze Nanostream 6045

Salt mix- Skimz Pur Reef

Lighting- Maxspect Glaive 30cm

Aquaroche scape for biological filtration

Planning to keep some simple/hardy corals (recommendations?) and 5-8 small fishes/invertebrates

Won't have access to rodi water yet and no plans on getting a chiller.

Any feedback/recommendations greatly appreciated.

Can start with soft corals (Zoas, Xenia, mushrooms etc). A lot hardier than hard corals.

After a while can move on the LPS corals (hammer, bubble etc)

As for live stock, IMO no damsels... I've become biased against keeping them after I had 2 for a month in a 2ft cube. They terrorise all new additions, too aggressive.
