Fishtank05
I plan to make a 4 feet tank but have not decided to use it for reef or fowlr. Is the construct the same? Does both require the same sump tank setup? Out of curiosity, is marine sump tank design same as freshwater sump tank? Thanks in advance. I am new to marine fish keeping as I have only kept freshwater fishes previously.
SRC Member soggycookies Posted February 27, 2020 SRC Member Share Posted February 27, 2020 most important thing i feel is the glass thickness. for a 4ft definitely go for 10mm thickness or more due to the difference in density of sw compared to fw. sump design, it’s easier to take a look at images or diagrams of marine setups to get a better idea of what you want to go for. generally you’d want a separate compartment for a return pump and protein skimmer/other equipment like reactors, and depending on the sump size, perhaps a compartment to serve as a refugium(optional usually to grow macroalgae for nutrient control). for the part that drains from the display into the sump you could still go with filter floss/pads commonly seen in fw setups or try out filter socks Sent from Singapore Reef Club mobile app
Solo77
Design for fowlr n reef tank should be the same. For freshwater sump and marine sump, generally has different. For freshwater sump, think got more compartments to allow multiple media filtering. For marine, we have 3 main compartment, filter stage follows by equipment stage(skimmer, reactor, media, etc) and finally to return pump stage. More space catered for middle stage to allow flexibility in equipment addon etc. Hope this help. SRC Member Indeco Posted February 28, 2020 SRC Member Share Posted February 28, 2020 Just to add on a bit, between the refugium compartment and the next compartment design filter sock area to catch all the chaeto and dirt. Don't use normal filter sock but use net texture sock so it will not stop the pods from going to main tank. This will make clearing way more easy.
