My recommendation is to check your PH and Nitrate...I oso have this problem...solved by increasing PH (using PH buffer 8.3) and trying hard to reduce Nitrate...

Oso not forgetting to reduce your light timing.....i changed from 6hrs to 3hrs.

Lastly, add some snails....

could be due to many reasons, either alone or a combinations.

Over-feeding, extended photo-period, PH (like Klim mentioned) and your tap water.

Mine was the tap water. before I had a water change, all the diatom disappeared cos no more silicate for them. Then because of CNY I go change water, next day all come back. Tried the Seachem PhosGuard but a RO/DI unit is more effective. Still saving $$ for it :)

some purple and brownish thingy on growing on the sand bed..

can share how to get rid of them?

do sand shifters help?

In order to help you better, some more info or pics will certainly point you in the right direction.

Algae on sand bed can be due 3 things.

1)Poor wtaer quality (high NO3, PO4 etc)

2)Poor water circulation.

3)Poor lightings/long phot periods.
