  1. Hi, Pardon me... the fish looks like the Kaps' Glass Perchlet. Very common and can be found in most of Singapore water... Regards... Dotty
  2. Hi, I understand that those found in Singapore is Turbo brunneus. Wonder if it is the same in terms of effectiveness as Turbo fluctuosus? Regards... Dotty
  3. Hi, Wonder if anyone here have the caresheet for Turbo fluctuosus? Also, which LFS have them? Thanx. Regards... Dotty
  4. Hi, This may be too late... but good for information. I remember visiting one Marine aquarium in Alexandra Village a few months back - the owner is the brother of the owner of Wong Loy Kee. The shop is in between the food centre and the Queenstown Shopping Centre... if I remember correctly, it is somewhere near the bank/overhead bridge (but not facing the road). Not sure what is the current status of the shop though... Regards... Dotty
  5. Hi, For some florescent tube, you may be able to find the color temperature and lumin per watt on the paper sleeve ... I think the warm white color temp for normal florescent tube is around 4500K and the cool white is about 6200K-6500K. There is one florescent tube with color temperature of 6700K. There are also normal color florescent tube with color temperature of greater than 10000K (blue color light) but you will need to verify the value at its manufacturer website if any. I think besides looking at the color temperature, you will need to consider the lumin per watt. If I'm not wrong, most normal florescent tube has rather low lumin per watt compared to those florescent tube meant for aquarium. Regards... Dotty
  6. Hi DIYers, Wonder if anyone here know where to get Beckett Injector? How much is one unit? Am thinking of DIYing a Beckett skimmer. Thanx. Regards... Dotty

  9. HI, Wonder if anyone here know if there are any marine fish or equipment shop in Sydney or Canberra, Australia? Am planning a business trip there, thought of dropping by any of such shops in the area if convenient. Address will be greatly appreciated, thanx. Regards... Dotty
  10. Hi, Does anyone know how much lumin does a 4' T5 out put? Both normal and HO... info appreciated... thanx. Regards... Dotty
  11. Hi, Did you check (or smell) for dead sponges or organism that comes with the corals? Especially the zoos and mushroom which tend to have sponges and other organism on them. May be due to dead sponges which spoil the water... leather and mushroom don't die out so suddenly unless the water parameter is really out. For me, I would normally smell the coral before buying them... you'll not missed the smell - I would not buy any coral if it smell bad... even though it may looks good from the outside... much like buying durian one way to do now is to check each piece of your corals for bad smell and throw out the bad ones... my 1 cent advice... in my experience, putting in a large number of corals at one shot should not cause too much problem (provided they are in good condition)... I'm only worry about the water level increase when doing so... Regards.... Dotty
  12. Hi Reeffer, The T-connector will rotate due to the torque generated when the water exit the L-joint ( the L-joint must be in opposite direction). Regards... Dotty
  13. HI, Hard to explain.... I have drawn a cross section view instead. Hoped it helps in the understanding. FYI. It took me a few days thinking how to make the rotation portion using the 13mm PVC pipe... Regards... Dotty
  14. Hi, Has anyone used this before? Any comments? Looks good from the description but would appreciates comments from those who have used it. Thanx. Regards... Dotty
  15. Hi Reeffer, Here's a photo of a DIY rotating thingy that you are looking for... I DIYed it a few months back... cost me less than $3. The key to this DIY is to find the right piping to fit together... the trick to the rotation is the sanded down portion of a pipe to fit a ring (13mm pvc pipe) and this ring is free to rotate. The sanding down is the tedious part. You will need to have the rotating pipe to nicely fit the pipe (to be connected to the powerhead). I'm using one of those pipes that come with the old powerhead which fortunately fit the nicely with the 13mm pvc pipe. I need to use a bit of force to move the rotating ring into the powerhead pipe. The T and elbow are connected to the PVC ring with the powerhead pipe outlet inside the T (but not obstructing the waterflow from the powerhead). I have tested it running a few weeks and it works very well. A possible modification is to have the elbow outlet constricted ( i.e. pressed to a I-shape instead of O-shape). I didn't do the modification because I don't want the flow to be too powerful - without the I-shape outlet, the rotation is pretty slow. Hoped this gives you some idea how this can be done. Regards.... Happy DIYing... Dotty
  16. Hi, I have a CL650 chiller and is currently connected to a Ehiem 1060 (flowrate of 2280 l/h). I have this 'funny' problem with it... the chiller will turn on for about 1.5 min and rest for 3.5 min and then on again for 1.5 min.... I noticed that the temperature in dicator will indicate 29C and the chiller will kick in - afterwhich the temperature will then drop 1 degree after 45 sec, cutting off at 27C. All this while the tank's temperature is within the 27.x range. From what I understand, this should not be the case. Wonder if there are anyone with the same problem? Is it because my flowrate is too high or too low? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanx. PS: I'm using the CL650 for my 380l tank. Regards... Dotty
  17. Hi, Please see the below extracted reply on my enquiry to AVA on the importation of giant clams, hoped this is helpful: "The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore allows a traveller to bring in 5 pieces of giant clams, without the need for an import licence or inward declaration permit. However, all import of giant clams require CITES permits from both the exporting and importing countries. You may download the application form from the AVA website at www.ava.gov.sg. All applications for CITES import permit must be accompanied by a copy of the CITES export/re-export permit from the exporing country. The applicants may fax the application forms and supporting documents to the CITES Section at fax: 63257646. Upon Customs clearance of the consignment, the ORIGINAL CITES export/re-export permit must be submitted to the CITES Section at 5 Maxwell Road, Tower Block MND Complex, #02-00 S(069110)." Regards... 18. Hi Melvyn, Thanx for the advice. Are you saying that putting a higher flow rate PH will help? Regards... Dotty
  19. Hi, Sorry to hijack this thread... I bought a CL650 recently to cool my 400L (tank+sump - should be lesser if consider LR)... running about 300W of lights. The chiller is set to 28 degrees as my tank temp register 27 degrees... anyway, the chiller seems to be running most of the time ( hmm... just saw my Nov bill - mid month and it is already consumed 200KWh more than my usual electric bill ) ... thought I have already buy a higher hp ... supposed to only need 1/5hp given the heat generated... Is this normal? My previous chiller (1/5 from Aquatechic) don't seem to be that bad.... what other things can affect the proper running of the chiller? Help greatly appreciated. Regards... Dotty
  20. Hi, Cichilds in salt water not uncommon... go to Rochor Canal and you will see tonnes of them in the canal (I believed the water is blackish - if not really blackish ). I think those in the canal have adjusted to the water condition and I believed they are breeding in the canal... Regards... Dotty
  21. Hi, Just bought a JEBO 13W UV Sterilizer from one of the LFS - I have the following questions which I hoped someone can help me with: a. What is the flow rate should I be using with this unit (for 4 ft tank)? b. Should I keep it running 24 hrs? c. The sterilizer seems to run pretty hot ( I did a test without water and it is hot!!), is this normal? d. There is no instruction in the package that I have bought but I read somewhere on the web that it is supposed to come with a pump - well, mine does not have any. Call up the LFS and the reply is that the price I'm paying does not come with any pump (??!!!) - anyone has the price for JEBO 13W? Please PM me, just want to know if I have just become a sucker and will avoid that LFS in the future... Thanx. Regards... Dotty
  22. Hi, Wonder if anyone can help - I'm thinking of buying a RO/DI but don't know where to start... anyone here care to point the way? Where to buy, what to look out for and also $$$ if possible. Please PM me if not convenient. Thanx in advance. Regards... Dotty
  23. Hi, I visit the place quite often. The old man is pretty knowledgeable in keeping marine tank as compared to many converted FW LFS. The lady shop owner is more friendly. The prices of the LS used to be much cheaper (some time even cheaper than fish farms) but the current price is still reasonable. Variety of stock depends on shipment... Regards... Dotty
  24. Hi, Am wanting to DIY a lighting housing and looking for cheap electronic ballasts. Am looking for 1-to-2 or 1-to-4 electronic ballast - normal electronic ballast that can be used for 4 feet lights. Anyone know where to get them? Any feel how much they cost? Regards... Dotty
  25. Hi MV3i/CookieMunster, Yes... a float switch will be a better replacement for the 2 metal strip (less hasle in inverting the close circuit to break the PH circuit). Well, one of my motivation of making my own float switch is because of the high price you have to pay for a simple device such as a float siwtch (above $18?)- I can make one under $3. and am prepare to take the risk - well that's implicit risk for any DIY project right? I'm glad that this has generated so many sharing - I remember searching the internet when conceptualising this DIY project and there are not much information - especially how to make a float switch. Incidentally, does anyone know how does the commercial float switch work? Curious to find out but not curious enough to spend $18 to open one up. Will share with the rest my DIY wave maker when I find the time... meanwhile, I'm now working on the rotating 'thingy' that you connect to the powerhead that is supposed to create a better water flow... has anyone done that already? Well, the motivation is the same, not prepared to paid $18 for a simple device like that... Regards... Dotty
