  1. It is quite easy to minimize the risk of overflow by utilizing two float switches. One switch is to control top off pump (connect through a relay) and the other will trigger devices that only kick-in (or switch off) during emergency. E.g: switch on emergency pump, open gravity-fed valve, switch off return pump etc...
  2. I think salt creep is almost unavoidable in diy srubber build. I clean my splash guard every month. Just dissemble the whole thing and clean with freshwater. It takes less that 10mins.

  5. You can try using the glass tube. I suspect the pastic straw won't leech anything harmful unless it is constantly submerged. I prefer using glass tube because it is easier to target feed those coral located at bottom of the tank.
