I think normal practice would be to buy starboard the just a little smaller than the floor of the tank so that it can easily be slotted into place and silicon it to the floor of the tank making sure to also silicon the edge and corners.
Like some of the bros advised, if you have a sump, maybe adding baffles and filter wool might help. Is your skimmer in the last chamber? Mabe locating it in the second chamber might help.
If you're using hang-on skimmer like a prizm, maybe a course filter wool at the last chamber might help but make sure it's not too compactly stuffed in...otherwise will restrict flow.

Will using a household steam cleaner to clean the heat exchanger fins and then flushing with water periodically (say once a month) help? This would of course be besides the standard 6 mthly or yearly servicing by the pros.
My percs eat just about anything...cyclopeeze, brine shrimp, mysis shrimp...will try to steal a bite of zooplankton when I target feed my corals. Heck, they even eat the nori I feed my YT, the greedy pigs!
