  6. anyone who's tried diying the coil denitrator care to share your experience??? bro zarkon.. any comments on my setup..?? thanks!
  7. hi...thanks for the fast reply! anyway.. i'm having a 3 ft tank and i use a container about 27cm in diameter and 35 cm high... i have about 30m of normal air tubes inside and the rest of the space is filled with bioballs and some seachem denitrate.. my flow rate's pretty high like 2-3 drops per second, thats y i'm considering whether i should lower that amount... it's been running for over a week and i'm gonna test the parameters at the outlet pretty soon.. according to what you've experienced... it seems like the conventional 5-6 wks of cycling doesn't apply to u..?
  8. hi releeps... i'm currently trying to cycle my diy coil denitrator too! just wanna ask u some of the things regarding urs since u've seen some results... 1. wat's the drip rate before u tested and realised that there's a high level of nitrites 2. how long has it been since u began cycling ur coil denitrator? 3. wat's the current drip rate? was juz pondering over some things about the denitrator and maybe you guys could contribute and discuss... is the height or the volume of the denitrator important? i.e if u have a tall one as compared to a fat one, both having the same volume will they produce the same results or require the same drip rate? pls share your thoughts! thanks!
  9. oh.. i use a chiller and the temperature ranges around 26-28... shouldn't be a problem?
  10. thanks for the fast reply! i've searched the forum about it and there are so many views on how to care for them.. some say moderate light, strong light etc.. one thing i read along the way that AT said corals bleach due to sudden strong lights, could it be for my case as the person i got it from doesn't use such strong lights? i didnt really test my phosphates... but i use rowaphos, come to think of it.. i recently have a small green hair algae problem. question: how long does rowaphos last and how you know when to change it? nitrates are about 20? xin24: what kind of nutrients are we talking about? thanks again!
  11. hi fellow reefers... i recently got an open brain coral about 2-3 weeks in my tank. other than the slight injury at one edge of the coral, i realised throughout these 3 weeks the colour has been bleaching all around the edge, inwards from red to pink... and the coral doesn't seem to be opening much as it looks very skinny and the shape of the hard skeleton is mostly visible under the flesh, especially around the edges... i'm using 150W 10K mh lights and the current is moderate. the other corals in my tank are doing fine. would like to find out from you guys how do u take care of ur open brain corals, when do they expand ( with lights or at night ) and whether you feed them and with what. currently i've moved it to my sump as i wanna try to feed it to let it recover and its really hard in the main tank due to fishs etc. just wondering whether it can actually be put under 24 hrs lighting? would appreciate your valuable advice! thanks!
  12. hi Gripshoppe & AT.. thanks for your reply!! just to clarify... i do have enough bubbling.. more than the 2/3 bubbles per second advocated by either bawater or cookiemonster.. however... the green stuff will still settle at the bottom after 1 day or so.. but i do try to shake the bottle abit.. when i so that the water seems to become greener.. is it normal den AT that i get that results? thanks for your advice again..!! really appreciate it!
  13. hi fellow reefers, i've just began trying to culture phyto and i'm following the steps both bawater and cookiemonster have advocated.. however my first bottle of culture started settling after 2 days leaving mainly green stuff at the bottom and slightly greenish water. is it normal to see that or the water will become greener by the day without any sedimentation at the bottom..? pls advice.. thanks!
  14. thanks pple.. i'm slowly trying to stock up.. so gotta plan what to buy and not get the wrongs things.. thanks again.. keep those suggestions coming..! if you have seen them anywhere at a good price recently could suggest also?? thanks..
  15. hihi.. nice eel have there.. looks cute.. haha. what do u feed it and where's reef en nature by the way..?? thanks..
  16. hi.. actually i think quite a few fishes eat the pods.. i've seen my clowns eat them.. but they only eat them if they happen to be swimming in front of them, unlike the mandarin.. think its a passing phase.. after u start stocking you will realise u don't see the pods around that often anymore, so buying a mandarin fish first isn't such a good idea. its better to let ur tank mature first as the mandarin is not an easy fish to keep.
  17. hey.. actually most important thing is to make sure the blue tang's eating.. i have 2 and when they were first introduced to my tank they had a bit of ich.. make sure they continue eating and add garlic in the food u feed them.. sometimes catching them out and puting in a foreign and alien environment might just add to the stress.. hope ur tang will recover soon! good luck!
  18. hey.. the aboved advice regarding good flow and light are very valid. i have one bubble tip and i placed it quite high and along the path of the water outlet and it hasn't moved since i got it... more than a month... just another advice.. do not place them close to other corals especially those with long polyps as they might accidently be stung by your anemone..
  19. hi fellow reefers, i was looking at my tank (mainly LPS and softies) and i realised there aren't much colours like blue, red, green, yellow.. would juz like all to suggest some more colourful corals that you like here and perhaps if you've spoted them around recently so that we can make our tanks more colourful and attractive! if possible could add a picture for the benefit of newbies like me? thanks alot!!!
  20. i use a scissors to cut them off at the base and remove watever the top part.. do u guys think it will work?
  21. i tink it could be true as i've seen luohans living in the canals close to east coast beach... the water there rises as the tide comes in.. and i'm sure its salt water..! tink those luohans that are released into canals after the luohan craze are a sad bunch.. poor thing..
  22. hi there, i haven't tried coralife salt before, but i'm using marine environment salt which in my opinion is quite good. though my tank is only about 3-4 months old, so far there are no problems and i attribute part of it to the salt. it's quite good even though it's abit pricier.
  23. hi, i'm using a resun cl450 for my 3 feet tank, and its the new version. i feel the noise is quite bearable, as i have mine out in the open in the living room and it doesn't bother my family at all. Most of the stock out there are the new batch ones so prob just ask to confirm will do. and i think servicing wise although there is no warrenty for this product, there are shops out there which offer servicing. its quite a good buy considering its price.
  24. hi there... i would think a black sea cucumber is quite effective as it does its job and doesn't make the tank too messy, unlike the blue cheek. and if ur blue cheek doesn't eat prepared food, it'll starve when the algae on the sand runs out. the two spot is a pretty good choice too, however i feel its not suitable for bigger tanks.
  25. oh.. another question, will water changes lower the calcium levels? if it does doesnt it mean u will have to add calcium everytime you change water? thanks again..
