canister works as a sealed air/water tight system. the sealed system allows siphonic action to draw water into the canister. technically it's not concievably possible. however, if you study the eheim 2227 wet/dry canister series, you might be able to modify that. those canisters do not work on a air/water tight system.

alternatives for crush coral = biohome, eheim substrat etc. but again there will always be the theory that it will cause shit buildup. 2 solutions: 1. change your filter media now and then. say you have 3 media baskets of crushed coral. every month throw out one basket and put new crushed coral. this way there will always be old bacteria, but u get to remove the build up of waste in the media, part by part. 2. put a sponge on the pipe that sucks water into the filter. This way all big pieces of waste will get trapped thus mechanically filtered in that sponge and water going into the canister will be free from physical waste. Everyday remove that sponge and rinse it out thoroughly.

yeah agreed. every system has its pros and cons. For a 100L tank if you have a eheim 1262 pumping at 3400L/H you get 34 times an hour. if you have a 1260 at 2400L/H you get 24 times an hour. But seriously, how many of us would install a 1260 pump to power a 2ft? The trend is that as the tank size increase, we tend to substitude turnover rate with flow rate that is generated by wavemakers. It is possible to achieve high turnover with sumps but not many people do that because it is costly, espcially if the tank volume is big. well yes sump don't need regular cleaning. but i'm sure you will wash out the wool in the 1st mechanical filter stage of your sump pretty regularly? If i had a sump, i'll defintely try to wash that everyday! I'm not saying that canisters is any better. I'm just saying that canisters is not any worse off then a sump.

With this system, i'm also able to achieve a water turn over rate of 26 times an hour. that means ALL the water will go through the filter 26 times and hour. Even if you conservatively half that, it's still 13 times an hour. normal sump aquariums can at most perform at 6-8 times?

This is a very clean setup, no messy plumping. Many say that canisters are inconveneint when washing/changing media. Many reefers have criticised me on that. Actually that is not true. With the eheim valve technology, the canister can be disconnected from the tank, brought to the toilet, flushed out, and then popped back in. All without a drip of water in your living room. can you carry a sump to the toilet to wash and then bring it back so easily and conveniently?

Forgot to mention, the reason why this tank was closed is because I'm leaving the country for a year. Want to recover some cost and pass on some goodies to fellow reefers.
