Get the 2 in 1 Tropic Marin Nitrite-/Nitrate test kit , once Nitrite zero, you can use it to check Nitrate too.

His tank is not that big and not many rocks. Hence, once the tank fully cycle, shouldn't be a big problem to net out the 2 damsels.

Note that for small holes, dust will accumulate faster and you need a gap for feeding.

Eggcrate is an ideal choice for covering. The vents are small enough to prevent jumping fish and big enough for light and air circulation.

You are right we shouldn't do it if the effluent is 0ppm for NO3. But my effluent output is 100ppm (out of range)! The last time I measured it was 2 yrs ago where the effluent is 0ppm. So, I think it is best to measure it half yearly or quarterly, just to make sure it functions as it should be.

You can take it out and rinse it. I just did mine after 2.5 yrs, so much detritus in it until it become nitrate factory instead of denitrator.

You mean finicky fish formula? So far I don't see any lfs that sells new life spectrum food carry this formula.
