  1. Hi, Both are juveniles...The bigger one is mono (monodactylus argenteus) and the smaller one looks like a Spotted Scat ( Scatophagus argus). They are pretty common in Singapore waters, especially in East Coast. Regards... Raiden

  4. HI mengyang - yes, we met at reefzzz place.... always good to be able to put a face to the name... Yes, already full... now thinking of rescaping to make more space... ha..ha... that's the beauty of nano tank... no worries of rescaping and cleaning... all can be done is such a short time... I remember when I still have my 48"x20"x28" reef tank... rescaping takes a long time to decide as it takes many hours to do and have to really plan properly... down to the number of pails and basins to use... I am happy with the nano - even though it cannot satisfy my urge in wanting to keep more stuff... only thing is to have the discipline to resist buying stuff. Hi Ukiya - surely.... may be one of the Sat after our fishfarm pilgrimage... HI desideria - yes, you are right... the water temperature increased after I switch from a 10W LED lighting to the 36W T5... am looking out for an inexpensive chiller... am now considering DIY myself a TEM chiller or if a cheaper ICEPROBE appears in the maketplace section... ha..ha... always not fast enough to grab the good deals... in fact the temperature went even higher when I have a wave-maker running... have since stopped the wavemaker to tradeoff more current flow with lower temperature... hope to change the situation soon... meanwhile, icepacks is the routine that works... and thankfully, the inhabitants are still alright without the added flow. Hi ahsiang - hmm... the clam is actually green when I look from the top... I think it could be the angle...but may be you are right... I am new to LED and T5 as I have been using MH and T8 tubes for my previously decomm 4' reef tanks. Am especially confused by an article that I read last night about LED - it is supposed to be better than T5 even though LED may looks dimmer (due to the characteristics of LED lighting) than T5/T2. Am now contemplating of switching back to the LED... ha..ha.. for sure, I miss the wavy light effects of the LED light. decision.... decision.... I switch to T5 two weeks ago because I was applying the rule of thumb of watts per gallon (since it is only 10W for the LED).... but after reading the article I mentioned, it seems like such rule of thumb is not really a good guage... I saw a comparison of the effect of 12W LED with a MH on plants... amazing difference, in favour of LED... any advice?

Hi all, Just to share some photos of my nano tank - 11 weeks old... enjoy Specs - 45cm x 30cm x 30 cm tank - Fluval 403 Canister Filter(reuse from my decom 4' reef tank a few years back) - 2x 16W T5 white light (Aquazonic) - 1x 6W underwater actinic light (Aquazonic) + 50cm Reflector - DIY algae scrubber ###### sump - 3 inch sandbed (seeded with Funky Old Reef Mud) Inhabitants 2 x banded damsel 4 x gray damsel 4 x bali black legs hermit crab 1x local hermit crab 3x pink sea cucumber 1x cleaner shrimp 2x gaint clam 3x sand seastar 6x snails ?x crabs (stowaway from the zoathids and live rocks) ?x worms (stowaway from the zoathids and live rocks, now established in the sandbed) Corals - Different color zoathids - Sea mat - bubble coral (mini) - Sun coral (mini) - Moon coral (?) - pink sea fan - cup corals - encrusting green monti (?) - jewel coral - gonipora (mini) All corals are opening well except for the gonipora that refused to open even though the jewel open very nicely. Maintenance Currently cooling using 1.3L ice pack (one in the morning and one at night) - temp between 27-30C; Average 29C. Have also installed a cooler fan but have not kicked in as yet since my thermostat is set to 30C. Currently thinking of DIY a TEM chiller to be used in the DIY Algae Scrubber (anyone knows where to get anodised aluminium rod [2cm dia]?)   7. hi ketchup, yap... the light right now does shine into the main tank but it does look nice ... not sure what will be the effect though... hi tunicate, thanx for the feedback... indeed, if the mechanical filtration does its work of removing the nutrients from the water... I would have achieve the purpose of the filter... albeit the scrubber may not be fast 'growing' would be fine I guess. hmm... will have to see how to mount the light closer to the scrubber... all suggestions are welcomed...   8. yes, the original design has a much longer flow area but was later limmited by the angle of the triangular strip (45 degree). My main concern is the proper sealing of base of the plate. i guess this may not be the constraint once i am better in joining acrylic. one good side effect of angle at 45 degree is that i can place the light directly above without losing effectiveness. Will surely consider a greater angles in my next make.
  9. hi ketchup, yap... I am using a 2000L/H powerhead to pump the water from main tank. It has very good flow. Only thing to watch is the netting needs to touch the main tank water surface, else you will have bubbles. Regards... Raiden
  10. Hi, I started a 45cm x 30cm x 30cm nano reef tank about 2 months back with the standard hangon filter and skimmer. I happened to read about the effects of an algae scrubber and was pretty intrigued by the results - especially the part on able to replacing the skimmer with it. Was looking for a design that will fit my limited space. I happened to come across an overhead filter design in a LFS and that inspired me to come up with the DIY design that function as a algae scrubber, refugium and sump for filter materials. Here's to share a few photos of the making process. Do pardon the workmanship as I was ill-equipped to work with acrylic (ha..ha.. don't even have a acrylic glue applicator - am using an applicator for oil; so ended up with some unsightly glue streak on the acrylic panels); Was trying out using a scoring method (using a pen knife) to cut the acrylic; seems to work well after a bit of practice. Anyway, like a fellow reefer was telling me... as long as it works... ;P OK, here are the photos... Photo 1 - Laying out of the design on the acrylic sheet (3mm) Photo 2 - Mounting the acrylic sheet for cutting on my makeshift work table (ha..ha.. using a wooden chest from IKEA) Photo 3 - A shot of after the acrylic was 'cut' - simply score the acrylic about 10 times (for 3mm sheet)and break it with a sudden application of downward force. Photo 4 - Acrylic panel after they have been cut. Awaiting gluing. Photo 5 - The complete filter after gluing. The glueing process for me was a challenge as I am not using a proper acrylic glue applicator (ha..ha.. that's why no photo). The glueing requires you to act fast as it bonds within seconds. It became easier after a few try. As I am using only 3mm thick sheet (as that's the thickest I can find in Art Friend), so I reinforce the joints with 3mm triangular acrylic strips, hence making the join to be 6mm thick. Photo 6 - A closeup shot of the filter in action after leaving it to cure for 24 hrs. This is to ensure that the joints are fully bonded. Afterwhich, a freshwater test was conducted to see if the joints are done properly. For this case, there were 3 spots where the sealing was not done properly. This was rectified with the triangular strips. Am starting with filter wool and will add other material like carbon and rowaphos later. Photo 7 - A shot of how it looks when mounted on top of my nano tank. I have added a II-shape wooden support behind to support the filter so that I can position it far back of the tank so as not to block the lights to the back of the tank. Photo 8 - A closeup on the mesh for the algae scrubber. Am using those netting bags that you can find at daiso. I am using a 9W PL light (Warm White) as a light source for the algae and is turned on for about 16 hours. The green stuff is chaeto and sea lettuce, put in there as macro-algae filter while the algae scrubber 'matures'; hopefully, this will also form the refugium for small critters later on. This is a short sharing and I hope the sharing is useful to you. FYI. Before working on this, I approached a LFS to make this using glass and the LFS wanted to charge me $90 for it. So I ended up doing it with acrylic and the total cost of the acrylic sheet and strips comes up to about $25; and of course the experience gained in working with acrylic is priceless. Raiden

  12. hi... try Art Friend at Bras Brasah Centre... they use to sell acrylic rods... if not, there are some shops doing acrylic jobs in the centre... they may have... or the popular acrylic place in UBI... (sorry can't remember the name of the place...)
  13. hi... what size hook you use? I previously use size 22 or 20 hook (the smallest I can find at the Changi tackle shop)... the hook should be used with really fine line...it works best when I stop feeding for a day or so to get them really hungry... small bits of prawn should work fine... BTW, I never have any results with traps... Hope this helps... happy fishing...
  14. Hi, 1) Can the pump be used externally? I.e. outside sump. No. This is a in-water pump. 2) How 'old' is this pump? Can't remember exactly but should be < 2 years 3) do you know if the 6540 is suitable to power up Resun CL650 (for a 2.5 ft tank only)? Not too sure as I only used it as return pump.
