  1. Do anglers establish territories? If your angler is always hanging around a visible spot, then you should congratulate yourself. Better than always hiding behind some rocks which you can't see it right?
  2. Lucky you. I starved my dwarf for almost a week, and it refused to feed on frozen. In the end, I gave up and started feeding it live. Apparently it is not difficult to wean volitans into frozen. Anyone has successfully gotten his/her volitan to feed on pellets?
  3. I understand there may be some issues for using sand that is too coarse, but it does not really matter if grade 0, 1 or 2 sand is being used in a plenum right? I prefer grade 0 for aesthetic reasons, and I already have it in my present tank, so can also save a few bucks.
  4. Thanks for the info. I gather that the link focus more on DSB compared to plenum. I have read in some websites that different sizes of sands are used for the plenum. Is it ok if I use only grade 0 throughout the setup?
  5. Mysis may be too small for a 5" volitan. It should be able to feed on market shrimps. PC- how did you get your dwarf to feed on mysis?
  6. I am also using sponge filter in the sump to catch any sizable debris. Cleans it weekly. Makes no diff to the nitrate level, they are just as high. Skipper, is that sponge-pump meant for water flow? If got enuf flow, just remove the pump la. Adds heat and electric bills u know.
  7. So I guess we can use anything that prevents sand from getting into the plenum area, but must have openings to allow water exchange between the sand and the plenum?
  8. I was hoping that plenum is more effective in denitrifying than the DSB. As for the eyesore, can either cover up or use eye drops lah.
  9. I am thinking of making a "shelf" c/w covers, so that it looks like a cabinet. But instead of doors, these doors are totally removable. Is it feasible? Pl forgive me if I am deviating from the original topic.
  10. I couldn't agree more. It may be helpful if you have guidance from some friends who are willing to spend time with you on self assembly of tanks. Save more $$ and gain experience. But very time consuming.
  11. Hmm, seems like there is ambiguity on this. Some others have remarked that YT are more agressive. Maybe should do a poll on this. My problem is that the YT is much bigger than the SFT, so I think YT may win outright should it attack the SFT. Currently isolating the SFT.
  12. Hi all, Are sailfin tangs considered the same "shape" as yellow tangs? Anyone has successfully housed these 2 together? If they fight which one usually wins (i.e. which one should be introduced into the tank 1st)?
  13. U can use this website to calculate the volume of your bucket, then you will know how many % you are changing.
  14. Looks like 10% change for most reefers. Any specific why? For me 1 bucket is approx 10%, that's why 10%.
  15. Hi all Thinking of using a plenum system for my "new" tank. Read from this forum on plenum as follows: "Before you dump a lot of gravel into your tank, thing about what you ultimately want to do. Fish produce waste, other creatures need to clean it. A primary waste product is nitrates which can accumulate high enough to "burn" the fins off fish. There are two basic ways to remove nitrates, bacteria and changing water. Bacteria are much more efficient and work 24 hours a day and grow naturally - free is good. To have these bacteria present, we recommend using a PLENUM (plen-um). This is simply a water space under the gravel. We use 3-4" pieces of 1/2" PVC tubing lying sideways to support egg crate (the white, plastic, 1/2 by 1/2 square hole, fluorescent light diffuser) which we then cover with fiberglass window screen. Cover this with 2" to 3" of #1 aragonite (a-rag-go-nite) and Mother Nature will do the rest." Anyone knows what is a fibreglass window screen? Can it be replaced with other stuff? It's meant to keep the sand from falling into the plenum area right? Appreciate any advice.
  16. Don't think Kwong Ling does the pipings. They are not tank specialists, but more like in the glass-related industry. Got my 2 footer from them, quite satisfied considering their price. They can do sumps too.
  17. What about their positioning and water flow?
  18. You will clock high nitrate level in no time. Lions and triggers are pretty agressive eaters, and they poo a lot.
  19. Why would you need to do a dip? Unlike zoos (where nudis may hide in between the crevices), we can see the entire surface of the crust when the polyps are closed.
  20. I am considering designing a 2.5ft height cabinet to house my sump and skimmer (Macro AS350) cos the skimmer is only 2ft tall. But to do that means that my sump is almost sitting on the floor. So has anyone tried building a "baseless" cabinet and placing the sump on the floor?
  21. Is there a website that showcase Resun chillers?
  22. I am thinking of doing something like that too, except that the top portion becomes a seat rather than a "table". I see that you are using Resun 650. Do you have the dimension for that?
  23. Plan to shift in Jan. But still in planning stage. Got 2 main constraints - space and $$. So may need to shift back the entire tank, and just do a cabinet and buy a cheap chiller. Looks like the clowns are fated to be with me. Haha. But I need to give up my mandarins and lion. It's going to be strictly no "meaty" food tank. So all those that need to feed on frozen or live will need to go. Office migrating end FY. Can jio then.
