Salinity and other water elements

Recommended Posts

Should be okay. Normally, my direct tap water about 70 ppm.

OMG! This is the highest TDS I know for tap water!

Sad to say, i staying at jurong area for ard 15yrs and the TDS reading for tap water is abt 165ppm! As i using DI unit only, i need to change the resin every 75 litres in order to get 0 ppm....

Tank Size: 3 x 3 x 2 with 3.5ft cabinet

Mine is around 80-90. NTUC life water came out to between 10 and 20 for me. My TDS meter's resolution is 10ppm and so I change the resin as it hits 10 ( or a reading of 1 on the meter)."

Specs

Return pump: 2 x Eheim 1260 (with 1 pumped to chiller before returning to main)
Chiller: Hailea HC-500A (1/2 hp)
Skimmer: Deltec SC2060
Lightings: 8 x 24W ATI Sunpower T5 fixture
Wavemakers: Vortech MP40, MP10, Tunze nanostream 6045
Additives: TLF C-balance (2 parts Ca and Alk) via Kamoer 3 channel dosing pump; Polyp-lab Reef Resh; FM color elements

Holy cow! :ooh::shock: With this kind of TDS, I don't think I will even drink from the tap. No wonder, water filters are selling like hot cakes!

cool, i might have to consider a RO/DI unit then. seems like its pretty costly to keep purchasing water from stores (imagine the cartons i got to carry ><)

on the topic of heavy metals, what are the effect of them on corals anyway?

btw RO/DI units need not be run 24 hrs right? they can be used only when required?

Is there a volume capacity tied to spec of the RO/DI unit? it seems like they usually only specify a GPD rate and a TDS has to be used to determine if the contents has to be changed out. please correct me if im wrong here.

anyone has a gauge on the volume of water produced for a ZERO 5stage RO/DI unit can produce before the content need to be changed out?

apologies for tonnes of question. getting really excited on starting this new reef hobby.

Why there is such disparity in tap water? Hmmm...

PUB only ensure that water is palatable and no contaminants that will harm humans using WHO standard as a guidelines.

But there is no guaranteed analysis on water, just a generic table.

So if you want clearner water, you just need to get it yourself. ;)

No. Diamond water is for human consumption. The last stage of the filter system add mineral and other chemistry back to the water before discharge

Long use can result in hair algae grow.

DI Water is not Distilled water.

Anyway, I am using distilled water from Arees. Arees water are from Polar but re-branded as Polar. I got mine for $7 before GST.

DI = Deionized, it uses a Anion and Cation resin to filter on positively charged (Na+) or negatively charged (Cl-) atoms.

Distilled Water = Simply boil, evaporate and condense water. Pure water is harvested while minerals and impurity are left in kettle.

$7 b/f GST for 5gal approx 19l. I used 3 bottles per week, 2 for water change and 1 for water top up.

You can check with Vincent at Aquarium Artist...bought mine from him a few weeks back. Not sure if he still has stock.

From what I know, you need to install an Auto Top Off (ATO) system to top off your sump tank with fresh water... OR, do manual top up yourself with Fresh water.

Evaporation causes water to go up but not salt.

If your KH and Calcium are at stable levels, then you can top off with Kalk solution (mix into Fresh water) in your top off.

Hi All,

i currently have a 4ft tank uncovered and close to the window. its pretty hot in the area. i read around and evaporation would cause me to top up about 4L/day?

my real concern here is the top up of fresh water would help maintain my salinity but wouldn't it affect other parameters too like PH, Calcium, KH since topping up fresh water would dillute the solution.

Thanks in advance
