Eheim for external usage

the 1262 indeed introduces quite some heat to the water. and even if you do proper plumbing (reducing elbows, joints, check valves, etc)

imo, check valves are not really necessary if you get siphon breaks properly installed. firstly, check valves are quite a killer to flowrate, not to mention wear and tear over a period of time. siphon breaks are simple, easy to execute methods and so much easier to maintain without compromising flow rate

coming back to 1262. is is a decent return pump for ard 4 ft. 5 ft and above, it's disappointing.

my 2 cents

Hi there

I have 3 eheim pumps in my sump, 2x1260 n 1x1262, they r mainly used for skimmer, chiller n return. I m thinking of drilling holes in my sump n run them externally. B4 doing it, I wud like to have some advises or considerations to take note Wat I notice is that...currently if I off the switch, my return pump backflow water thru n out of my pump until it reaches the sifon break. Will water be backflow out of my eheim pump when there is a power failure. Yr advise n comments please. Thanks.

A alternative to check valves is the drilling of a hole in the return PVC pipe... this would break the siphon whenever there is a failure in power or pump...

But you have to ensure that when the pump is running, the drilled hole to be below the water level..... or else you be having bubbles introduced into your reef...

I just wonder for the people who choose to install their pump externally, is this because they are not using a chiller?

If you are using a chiller it does not really matter whether the pump generate more heat or not except that the electric bill is higher.

The advantage I can see of putting these pump in the water is that these pump are designed to be submerse in water. If you run them dry, the lifespan of the pump will be shorten, since there may not be enough water in the magnetic shaft to lubricate and reduce the friction between the magnetic and the plastic casing.

Imagine what disaster it will do to your tank if the pump is broken during the day when no one is around. Your chilled water only circulate in your sump.........your coral melts.....

Not to start a debate here but just want to get some opinion.

Cheers,

Patrick

I believe if the pump is design to run both externally & submersible(refer to pump manual for details), then it should be able to generate its own cooling by means of cooling guide vanes from casing or process media like a canned pump. Those stated submersible pump only should never be use as a external pump as it uses only the process media to cool down the motor.

Running external pump have a big advantage for those without a chiller due to heat contribution to the water , those with chiller the hassel is probably insignificant (lower your electricity bills by a few $).

Other minor advantages are :-

1)Electricity leakage to water

2)Rust from pump parts contaminating the water

3)Better cooling of pump (air are of smaller molecules than water therefore resulting in better heat exchange)

Disadvantage :-

1)Process leak to external (Lack of containment)

2)Slightly more noise contribution (sound waves travel faster through air than water)

2 cents worth....cheers

For me, to run them externally was to create space in the sump. 3 basic pumps now and eventually more will be added (eg for calcium reactor and whatever purpose where pumps are needed...)

BTW, I have successfully run my pumps externally using siphon method (hose n pipe) instead of drilling. Tks guy for feedbacks. Only thing now is I get some Zzzzz (vibration..light one) sound from my pump.

Juz a thought ... wonder is there anythings or ways where I can reduce the quantity of pump used...eg One solid pump which can be channel to several outlets eg. chiller, skimmer etc...instead of using so many pumps with so many pwer points needed.
