diying led. how many ?

hello. im planning to diy a led lighting set for my 2x1.5x1.5 . it will be a 30 gallon reef.

will be using cree led 5w . how many of them will i need ? 30 of them will be 150W , is it enough ? or should i go lesser like 120w ?

will be making them dimmable too.

Provide you run each LED at one ampere.

Otherwise you will not be getting 5 w of light from each 5 w led.

To run each LED at 1 amp you need a very efficient heat dissipation heat sink

otherwise the heat will shorten your LED life badly.

1 HP Daikin compressor with cooling coil
2 Jebao OW40, 1 ecotech MP40,
1X6085 Tunze wm,

1 CURVE 7 Skimmer

  1 DIY 80 led control by Bluefish mini 

1 radion XR30W G2, 2 Radion XR15G3

Sump area lite by 5 ft T5 , 6 * SSC 3 watt red LED for refugium

1 Full spectrum E27 led light

1 CR control by bubble count

Start No Water Change since 1st Dec 2016

Add new 2.5x2x 1.5 ft

The cost of getting a good heat sink is not cheap....

Tank : 3 x 2 x 1.8 ( setup end Feb 2014 ) --> 4 x 2 x 1.8 ( setup early Nov 2016 )
Skimmer : Bubble Magus NAC6 --> Bubble Magus Curve 7
Return pump : Jebao 10000l/h ( down in 17th December 2014 ) --> Jebao DC-12000 ( 19th December 2014 )
Compressor drop-in coil
Wavemaker : Tunze 6105 x 1
Lights : Modular based DIY LED light x 4

A good heat sink with fans cost as much as the electronics in a light set

hard to find really good heatsink (need fans too) that can handle the heat. i think its better to go for fixtures readily available.

I juz had an stupid idea....run a sea water cooling pipe thru aluminum heat sink, similar to those water cooling units on cpu?

why not run liquid nitrogen through the aluminium heatsink like those hardcore gaming PC ? :yahoo:

Water Cooling units have been use for high wattage (30 to 100w) multi-chip led before and you can probably use that if you got the parts.. But you'll still need very good heat sink.

Wah liquid nitrogen abit extreme leh..actually we dun really need a veri good heat sink but a suitable way of transferring the heat away from the source..I used to do water cooling 4 my CPU, using acrylic water block wif copper core n silicon piping to run the cooling water..result not bad!

Unless you are a keen DIYer I don't really advise you hop on this issue.

Beside getting a good heat sink you need to design and make a nice enclosure to house your DIY light.

You also need to design a good controller to get the sunrise, sunset, moonlight and dimming effect if you

want your light perform what the off the shelf unit can do.

Of course you can also just build a simple on /off by timer light set. And just a simple enclosure that can house

your whole DIY light.
