Battle with these hair like algaes for almost a year. Have tried rowaphos, siphoning and turkey blasting them but doesnt really stop it. I believe it should be phosphate leeching from within. I give up on these rocks/branches and replace with new ones then put these in my dark sump. Without light and over a period of time, they die off and now they still sit in the sump to house copepods.

I'm not worried if they are hair algae .. My tang , urchin and snails will get those .. They really look like dinoflagellates .. Nothing will touch those !! And non of my cleanup crew are touching this stuff in my tank..

If it's dinoflagellate, then a 3 days blackout will work. Do a water change with d.i. water after that.

Sis, are you using tap water or nsw for water change?

Reduce light photoperiod, max 7hrs a day, reduce feeding, weekly water change and try the 3 days blackout. Cover the tank with newspaper n shut down your lights for 3 days. After that perform 20% water change. Then monitor see if it comes back. Rowaphos in reactor will help absorb all the phosphate leeching from the rocks over time. Its a slow process, might take months. Meantime minimise on fishes.

Using DI water. Light photoperiod is 0% white 5% blue to 50% white and 100% blue for 3 hours, then back to 0% white 5% blue again. Can't do blackout, have corals inside. Have rowaphos in a reactor and also fishless atm because doing copper treatment. Im using It's Clear and Coralline Stimulator now and also your chaetos, after 3 days can see a slight decrease in the hair algae.

Hi BearishCat,

Yes, Nualgi is supposed to help remove unwanted algae.

Although this is a new product, the trials thus far in the US look promising.

However, we would like to have a hands-on experience with the product before commenting further on its effectiveness in eradicating unwanted algae.

Please check out the link provided earlier for more information.

Nice video, tech M magnesium. ....interesting, but like it says running carbon to absorb those metals components in the Tech M magnesium is important step.

I would suggest cleanup crew. I had some algae break out and the convict tang took care of it in 3 days time.
