it would also depend on the types of fishes ...

Why do we use "My 2 cents worth" when 1 cents are not legal tender in Singapore anymore? Shouldn't it be 5 cents worth?

amount of lr in a tank also depend on the quality of LR u get.. if u get all dead rocks den it does not serve much purposes... get those very good quality lr such as fiji rocks and you may need less....

you may also want to consider the amount o rocks according to your intention for the tank. eg you may wish to build towers so that some of your corals can get more of the lights for good health.

...what are u missing from your life?... dun wait till your last breathe before telling them that you care

i thought it is depend on the number of fish instead? can u enlighten me?

if you are keeping smaller streamed line kind fishes, you could add more LR.

Fishes like Lionfish and Tang would need more space therefore lots of LR would hinder their movement..

wil the amount of LR affect the quality of the water? more LR can cultivate more bacteria right?

Hi Sunnymau,

IMO the more the merrier. But ensure that you get the better qualty LR such as Fijii LR especially cured ones. FYI Cured LR means that most Nasties (Mantis shrimp, crab) has been remove thus you will not suffer from future "unknown" losses of live stocks. :D

Hope this helps.

NOT.. cured doesn't mean crabs, mantis and other pest do not exist... It just means its cycled.. There is no guarantee that pest wouldn't be bought together with the rocks..

 Just to add on...LR serves as a Biological filter and the place for the growth of nitrifying, heterotrophic bacteria and other detritivores but most importantly denitrifiers in the deeper crevices. The "Berlin" system of keeping marines depend only on LR with no substrate...those systems stock their entire tanks with LR. The current trend also includes DSB, Plenum or the Leng Sy mud refugium with macroalgae scrubbers.

IMO, you should first decide on the system you wish to adopt for filtration and whether you should have a pure reef set-up without fish, FOWLR or a mix fish and coral community tank. There is no definite answer to your question. The amount of Bio-load can be determined by the number of fish as well as the type of fish. Big eaters like groupers will generate more waste. LR from different regions of the world also vary in their porosity and hence their ability to house bacteria.

The use of LR depends very much on the aquascape too as mentioned ...open space with sand reflects more light and brightens up the place. However, a reef face replica will look empty without the built up of rocks. :)

Hi!

I had the same question when I started. My tank is 4'x1.5'x1.5, so about 250l. I used the 1lb/ Gal rule and I now have about 30kg of LR in my tank. I plan for a FOWLR. my thank is now cycled and I'm adding LS.

Will you plan to have a DSB? I recommend it to take care of your NO3.

;)

Dear Arcanehacker,

With all due respect I beg to differ, cycled LR is NOT cured LR. I know there are lots of LFS that claim to cured their LR but in fact just throw the LR into a tank with filtration in order for the nasties will slowly die off - this is not considered as curing. Curing besides the above all means that we have to scrub the LR clean from all debris, in fact a perfectly cured LR will be white rather than having algae encrusting on it. During this process, all surface inhabitant will die off leaving only the beneficial bacterial hidden in the pores of the LR.

Anyway, I was just expressing my views, I hope we can treat each others views and coments with all due respect rather than just cutting each other short.

:thanks:

lets say it is, try getting truely cured rocks for cycling and see how much die-offs and pest there is.. I bet there's still crabs and other pests running out...

Please note there is a word "most" in my earler sentence as you can see below.

"FYI Cured LR means that most Nasties (Mantis shrimp, crab) has been remove thus you will not suffer from future "unknown" losses of live stocks. "

I did not say that there "will not be any nasties".

I rest my case.
