Hmm.. IQ5 might not have many skimmer options. My take will be if I can't squeeze in a good skimmer, I rather not put any skimmer. So maybe u can consider good hang-on skimmers that would hang from the back portion of your tank.

Hmm.. U can also consider getting a lump of cheato and throwing it at the back compartment. As the cheato grow, they will remove nitrate. And it also gives a safe place for pods (good food for picky eaters like mandrain fishes) to grow. U might need an additional hang-on white light (cheap ones will do. Don't even need to be LED. They dun need fancy lights to flourish)

It will be good to have a mixture of things in your IOS. So think carefully what to mix with what :) Afterall.. That's why the IOS is segmented out into different sections.

If you're not feeding anything and your nitrates are skyrocketing, it either means that your live rocks have not cured properly and you are going through lots of die off at the moment, or it could be that the water you are using to mix your salt mix is high in nitrates.

Also, in relation to your comment about cycling longer - if you are already seeing nitrates in your tank (and high levels of nitrates at that), it means that your tank is cycled already. Waiting longer wouldn't have helped you much. You already have sufficient bacteria to convert so much nitrates. Instead, you should be looking at ways to reduce nitrates such as more frequent water changes, skimmer, biopellets etc.
