Sump Refugium: sand or no sand?

I think it really depends on your set up.

- A deep sand bed that's deep & large enough may work if you have a really large sump or a dedicated remote tank for it. For most of use here, the sump under the tank just isn't big enough to have an effective deep sand bed (for denitrification). So my personal preference is NOT to have a sand bed

- A shallow sand bed is pointless & just traps dirt
