Marinelife has lots of these, you bought one? I wouldn't be surprised if it was toxic. The bright warning colors look similar to the poison urchin, Toxopneustes pileolus. But it is beautiful, like the blue ring octopuses Marinelife is also selling.

It's venomous, but the toxin will only lightly paralyse. Got stung once cos I was catching it using bare hands (bad, bad idea), hit the radial nerve and had numbness all the way up my hand which lasted 30 mins. I've got a fetish for venomous animals.

I put it in my FO tank, which is very heavily stocked - and urchins need good quality water. Reef tank .. dare not risk it lah! Don't have enough algae in there to feed it anyway.

Got the same one in my tank.

Very bright purplish blue colour, especially under MH.

They don't algae as much or faster as those smaller red short spines urchin.
