Algae & Spots

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have lots of green & brown algae & red & black spots on the glass and fibreglass wall. In addition, the rocks in the tank started off as light red-purple but has turned deep red/purple with spots of almost black. There are also specks of black on the sand bed.

Tank details:

1. 4ft (L) x 1ft (W) x 2.5ft (H)

2. 4 inches of no 1 sand

3. 210 litres of water

4. 2x4ftx50W (1 white 1 actinic)

5. livestock -- 1 yellow tang, 1 purple tang, 2 true percula clown, 1 coris wrasse, 1 flame angel and 1 yellow anemone.

6. weipro 2010 skimmer with sicca pump 2500

7. main pump -- sicca pump 2500

8. phosphateguard

9. quality of water -- phos, ammo, no2 are 0. no3 about 10

10. the lights are switched on from 12noon to 10pm eveynight.

11. fishes are fed once a day at about 7.30pm

12. have been doing water change of 15% every 2 weeks since the fishes were introduced 2 months ago and the glass has to be cleaned every other day. the tank has been cycled for more than 6 months without fishes.

13. no sump. the water overflows and passes thro a column of coral chips and water are then pump back into the main tank.

Plse advise on the following :

1. How to control/stop the growth of green and brown algae? Phosphate is 0 and no3 is low, why the growth of green and brown algae?

2. Are the red spots coralline algae?

3. What are the black spots on the finreglass wall and the specks of black on the sandbed?

Appreciate your advise. Thanks.

I don't know about algae names but what I do know is that I started to buy cleaner team for my team and the green and red algae on the tank walls go wosssss...... in 2 days.

Here is what I bought.

2 x mexico turbo snail.

Subsequently,

6 x bumble bee snails (to clean those hard to reach area that the turbo snail can't access)

1 x hermit (to do some sand shifting and clearing uneaten food)

FYI: My cleaner pack isn't complete yet.

is the hermit crab compatible with my livestocks?

tried a couple of snails sometime back but after a while they seems to die.  is it suppose to be so?

how about the black spots i mentioned earlier?  what are they?

My brown, green, red and translucent spots on my tank wall is pretty clean up by my two hardworking Turbo snail.

Black spot on my sea bed is clean/ I think it was clean by my hermit crab. But as I have only one hermit thus there are still huge area with brown ,green and black algae.

Went out to buy 12 margarita snails to do the job. these are for the walls of the tank. some of them are pretty good --- the trail that they are moving along is totally cleaned, however, some of them tends to move towards the rocks and hide there.

Next to tackle the sandbed. will check out on the hermit crabs this weekend.

Thanks for all your advices.
