SRC Member danny Posted August 24, 2003 SRC Member Share Posted August 24, 2003 Hello Marine Hobbyist, Several days ago, my pair Clown Fish which are residents of my reef tank had a hard nib at my hand. They were defending their nest! I had a shock and accidentally splashed some water onto the hot metal halide protection glass. I cracked to many many smaller pieces. I didn't realised that my Sylvania 100K 150W MH bulb produced intense UV. In 5 hrs, many pieces of my corals, polyps, elephane ears, hammers, live rocks full of coraline algea perished! In just 5 hours! I took 2½ years to cultivate them! When to cut a normal glass to replaced it but again the same effect occurred, the light was very intensed and the remaining corals where closing! I have since switched it off and rely only on my actinic blue for the time being. That original glass is a UV Protector and tempered glass and can withstand high temperature. The normal, replacement glass that I put up cracked in 5min under the high temperature!!! I just hope someone could take a look at my pictures of my MH unit. It is a very common model. I need to find its replacement part, which is the glass protection piece. Else my corals that need intense light will die off. Could someone who knows this model of MH tell me where to find the replacement glass? Thank you very much for your information! Regards Danny .. SRC Member danny Posted August 25, 2003 Author SRC Member Share Posted August 25, 2003 Hi there, The Syvania MH bulb emit a very strong UV light and it burnt my corals and coraline algae in 5hrs! They just pathetically bleached to white colour! With the original UV protection glass, you don't see that! Regards Danny
