hi Guys,

I have intention of setting up a 5'(L)x3'(D)x2'(H) tank. I do not know how thick should the glass be, esp the bottom glass. I was wondering if anyone of you happen to have any experience in this sort of setup? as you are aware, the thicker the glass, the more $$$ it's going to costs.

Appreciate your advice on this.

thank you.

i went to the website. pulled some of my hairs trying to calculate it...(there is an excel s/s for d/w... duh).

this is the results :

5x3x2

side panel glass = 12mm

bottom panel glass = 19mm(actual is around 16mm)

4x4x2

side panel glass = 12mm

bottom panel glass = 15mm

thanks for the pointer... i hope this will help other reefers as well... :)

and one more thing to consider...

someone had mentioned to me that i should consider making the whole tank - tempered glass. only use 12mm glass thickness will be fine.

cos once tempered, the glass strength is 5 times more stronger than the normal one. pricing wise, not much diff... could be cheaper too... cos 12mm glass mah... see now it goes lah.

but tempered glass if break is straight away shatter, if normal glass breaks, there will be web like lines and will slowly leak...u still have time to salvage your ls..but tampered...straight away everything gone on the floor....not even a second to do damage control...

19mm glass very expensive....unless $$ is not an issue to you....else 12mm for whole tank should be fine....but i'm pretty sure the tank maker will advise you...

You might want to consider the Kelantan Lane.....there's a shop doing tank...very good workmanship.....

wow... this is news to me... so, it's safer to use 19mm for base and 12mm for sides than to have 12mm tempered-all rounder yeah...

or 12mm all rounder will be good enough? from the actual calculation(base of water pressure and rocks), the minimum req. for the base is already 16mm. can 12mm base handle those pressure?

nah... i'm not a DIY kinda guy :) i just want to be safe than sorry... some may have good experience with these sort of thing and it's good to understand certain things before i readily accept what the tank maker recommends...

as for the stand... i think i'm going to use bricks/cement since it's going to be a build in wall/cabinet.

best to have the weight evenly distributed... :)
