Cleaner Wrasse: Too important for a tank!!

Saw an article in another forum and think it helps.

Cleaner Wrasse:

In short they are too important for the health of a reef, the fish are extremely difficult to keep in an aquarium and there are fish that perform as similar role as the cleaner wrasse that are very hardy and can even be bred in captivity.

Doesn't agree with the article...even that it's true abt the poor survival rate of cleaner wrasse in captive. but there are a few successful stories around.

Other than that, I agree on the other aspects of the articles and thus don't recommend cleaner wrasses for the general public unless u are really experienced and have time for it. :>

I kind of agree with the article....cleaner wrasses are notoriously difficult to maintain for an extened period of time....even if they feed. Had one which fed on mysis/brine shrimps/pellets and Henry's food and was pretty fat but even then, it didn't managed to live pass 6 months.

Har...i have one with me for 1.5 years liao leh ! When i bought that time is 1.5" now grow to 3" and v meaty liao .

guess u need good water parameters, u need to get it feeding plus a good specimen for it to be alive ba.

Or maybe u can share with us wat u feed ur cleaner wrasse or how u take care of it...or maybe u got a good specimen. cos alot of these cleaner wrasse are very poorly handled.

I have known some who have had these adapt and thrive, but there might be thousands have died for every one that survived. Symbiotic friends of the reefs, cleaner wrasses provide a specialized purpose in a limited service area. We still have many other alternatives as mentioned in the article. Maybe can start a poll on it in SRC to find out how many survived and how many died within a couple of months...
