SRC Member Victor007 Posted April 9, 2008 SRC Member Share Posted April 9, 2008 nonono...dun use epsom salt. it will offset the sulphate and chloride balance in ur tank. contains alot of sulphate and will have bad effect if u dose heavily. still recommend u to use commercial brands which are safer. u can use epsom salt provided either u have regular water change to clean out ur sulphate or u also dose baking soda and calcium carbonate to manage the balance. it's not a recommendation to try. Can use epsom salt if you mix with magnesium chloride with ratio of 10:1 (mgcl : mgso4) into DI or distill water. Save lots of $$$. I'm using this mix for a year now in my sps tank any without problem. Maintaining about 1450ppm everytime. Mangesium chloride - $16 for 22kg (which can last may be more than 10 years) and so far use 2 epsom boxes for a year. Cheers. Magnesium chloride from chemical manufacturer in Tanjung Penjuru. Epsom salt from guardian pharmacy. You can find the info from Reefkeeping , etc,, however, 10:1 ratio should be ok. Or you can refer to the link previously I posted for the steps. I dose about 25ml every 3 days to maintain my magnesium for my 650liters tank. There are many chemical manufacturers around. Important thing is to find out the purity of the magnesium chloride. I bought a 25kg sack from: International Scientific Pte Ltd 33 Tanjong Penjuru S(609029) Tel: 62611744 Email : sales@ispl.com.sg Their Mgcl properties : ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ SPECIFICATIONS THE FOLLOWING SPECIFICATIONS REPRESENT THE TYPICAL, AVERAGE DATA OBTAINED FROM ACCEPTED TEST METHODS CONDUCTED AT THE PLANT:- MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE MgCl2.6H20 96% min MgSO4 2% max NaCl 2% max Descriptions - soluble in water and alcohol - deliquescent crystals DUE TO ITS HYGROSCOPIC PROPERTIES, A SLIGHT DEVIATION OF 1% MUST BE TOLERATED. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- They sell in sack form. You need your own transport to carry. Also, the magnesium chloride will melt upon contact with air as it absorbs moisture. So what I did is to put into ziplock for every 2kg. 2kg can last at least 6 months for my 650L tank. Cheers. I don't use calcium chloride as I have calcium reactor. There are reefers here know where to get the food grade ones and cheap. Yeah, I can share with you as its dirt cheap and I'm left with another 2kg only. $10 for at least 10kg, looks good. May be others would like to bulk purchase as well.
