brown algae

i have a 10g tank with lots of brown colour algae growing on the wall of my tank.in the morning i scraped them off but when i came back in the afternoon the algae was back there my nitrate level is 10 mg

Diatoms. This is due to silicates in tapwater. If there are no silicates diatoms cannot grow. You can either:

1) Live with it.

2) Use distilled or deionised water for making your saltwater and for topping up to compensate evaporation.

I'm using DI/DO water from my drinking tap for the every WC and recently there are sign of diatom appears on the sandbed. What I have done before the diatom apppears are only reducing the flow rate of the wave maker in my tank to cater for newly purchased prata.

I dun think my water contain any silicates so will be the cause of current flow is insufficent ?

Check your TDS. The DI resin might have been exhausted. Diatoms can only grow with silicates, it is their essential nutrient.

i get alot of brown algae when i dose additive like mg and ca. are these nutrient for the algae as well?

also, diatoms find it easier to grow when the water does not flow so much. your act of lowering the flow of the wavemaker could have contributed to the problem, together with the fact that your DI resin running out.

can anyone explain why is that my brown algae come and go? my situation is that when the light are on, brown algae start forming. after light off, maybe by next morning, all brown algae are almost gone? thing been going on like this for about a week. no change in water condition. or is this a nature cycle?

brown algae grow very fast...within hours can cover yr sand bed....water change and reduce yr feeding....and keep cleaning yr tank walls....

You can also indirectly help to reduce algal growth by growing clumps of certain algae like Chaetomorpha in your tank... Hope it helps

Mine gone in few days when I added 4 pcs of turbo snail and change my FR media. One more thing is i reduce my MH lighting and it help a lot.

i had this before and i reduced my lighting alot for a few days. Apparently this process allows the algae to starve to death...it works for me though.
