Slum + refugium

Hi,

Hoping to get some advice:

a) Planning to have the following in the sump. Sequence:

1) Biohome

2) Skimmer

3) Refugium

4) Return pump

any comments?

Also what should be kept in the refugium?

so far I've read abt cheato algae (food for pods?), sand bed (is there a need to change them yearly?) and live rocks (do i need them when they are alrady in the main tank?). I want the refugium to 'absorb' nitrates and breed pods. So whats the best setup (if any)?

Sump - Biohome, skimmer, return pump, DSB/live rocks/bare bottom (up to you)

Refugium - Cheato.

Get enough rocks and you should be able to do away with biohome or any bacteria housing media.. In fact, if you can or need, replace the biohome stuff with rocks.. Its way more manageable this way.

Problem with most of these medias is usually they trap detritus which then becomes a 'nitrate factory'..

ok, no biohome, ball, whatever. Your drain should go to your skimmer chamber, then to your return section. The third section should be a refugium that is fed from the return (use a T with a valve) and then drains back into the return.
