Hi Guys,

Anyone kept seahorse with Helfrich dartfish? I'm thinking of doing it. Possible? Any idea which is the best beginner seahorse species?

Cheers

JC

Should be fine... The Helfrich should not be too aggressive during feeding...

Beginner seahorses would be H. Reidi and H. Kuda.. I wouldn't recommend H. Comes because they are notorious for not eating even though they are cheap.

H. Reidi is expensive but they can swallow freshwater shrimp as they have big snouts and that is a plus point when you are training it to eat frozen..

H. Kudas is in affordable range even for yellow /red ones... With more captive bred kudas from Aussie and Vietnam, It is easier to get them feeding.. Will ones are a bit harder to wean on frozen...

Bro, you can give Hippocampus spinosissimus, the HedgeHog Seahorse a try. My experiences with them have been so far not too bad. Easily weaned to frozen mysis IME.

Joe, but spino very difficult to find leh...

If I'm not mistaken, Pen-raised Spinosimuss are readily availabe from Vietnam.

So if there is a shipment of aquacultured seahorses from Vietnam, chances are they might be hedgehogs.

H. Reidi is $120 onwards

H. Kuda is $20 onwards (Depending region and color)

H. Spino is $50 onwards (From Experience)

Anyone expert can give me some useful tips to differential these 3 species? From what I read, kuda has coronet turn back while reidi's coronet are large and convoluted. Spino has well-developed spine on their dorsal.

More tips will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

JC
