I know I can add a valve to reduce flow rate on the return pump but do not wish to do so as don't want to damage the pump. Also, overflow flow rate tends to fluctuate up and down. Had a few occasions when the overflow failed completely resulting in pump run dry. In this case, it mean that your return pump is too high. Reason because your overflow pipe was too small in size, since you cannot change the pipe, but u can change the pump to a lower flow rate. As long as the flow is 5 time and more over turn your total tank capacity, it should b fine. Too fast flow rate your sump water flow too fast, the bb cannot fully settle down and grow, sane as in your main tank. You should get a flow rate @ 2000-2500 max and that will able solve your "sump to go dry". you don't need any valve for your pipings...... Install a valve for the latter and adjust accordingly until smooth flow is achieved from overflow pipe, with some allowance. No need to change pump. The other output can also link to any reactors you might have. I am using just a single 30mm downpipe and i an using 12k + 5k return pumps. My guess is there could be trapped air inside the downpipe which results in the slow flow. At best slightly more than half the diameter of pipe, definitely not fully, unless you increase the pipe size for the last section before it flow to your sump. My all thru 25mm DIY overflow cannot take the full pump capacity of an ehiem 1260. Make sure you really glue it silicon it tape it whatever way you can think off to make them air tight.
