Red Slime Alge Gone

Recommended Posts

My tank is 5 mths old only. Mainly, fishes, LPS and mushy. Last mth, i was too tied up with my job to have proper maintainence to the tank. Last week, I realise that all my life rocks and sand bed is covered with red slime alge. Real bad condition. They are dame thick. They came out in a nice piece when i peel them out. After doing some research, I knew that this is red slime alge for sure.

I search through my medical box and found a piece of Amoxicillin 250. This is a broad antibiotic which a doct gave me when im down with some infections caused by bacteria. Just to experiment if this antibiotic is useful to kill red slime alge, I disolve 1 capsul into sea water and pour into the sump. today is already ther 3rd day after 1st dose. All red slime alge just dissapear! Corals and fishes are still active and healthy. No signs of side effect.

Will carry on to moinitor for side effects.

If it is a broad specturm antibiotic, it might also engage your other beneficial bacteria like those denitrifying and nitrifying bacteria etc?

Hmmmz. Very interesting! I'm having some red slime too.... Though i have just started dosing with hendrys goodbye P04, i'm gonna try to dose it with this amox capsule to supplement the recovery... And one more thing to add, these red slime algae started growing becoz something bad happened in the tank n triggered the growth... By just adding the amox capsule, yes we prevented the red slime from growing.. But we are not tackling the source of the problem n red slime will eventually come back sooner or later? I do urge all bros to also do check their filters, phosphate levels and such and not just hope the amox to give miracles... Just my two cents worth.

Apart from tat, kudos TS! We now have a new weapon to battle those pesky slimes!

Goodbye PO4 will not kill the red slime aglae as I have already dosed since last year june till now. Although Amox kill red slime aglae effectively but do take note that it also kill good and bad bacteria so remember to heavily dose bacteria after few days later.

yes, i agree amox does not solve the root of the problem...similarly, if one is using ultralife red slime remover or goodbye po4. but if the red slime problem keeps persisting, i think this method is good...bcoz red slime grows very fast...and the moh moh will ruin your tank if they start to appear on the live rocks and choke yr corals...

at least now when i reach home, i dun c these pesky red ang mohs...it affects my reefing morale...n my sea hare only eats green plankton algae...not these cyano bacteria.

Lacl3 (ingredient use for goodbye po4) is good to keep po4 checked...but will not remove cyanobacteria...n too frequent dosing will affect the oxygen levels in your tank....thats the reason why, u need to have strong flow when using this...to keep the oxygen level in yr tank going...otherwise, u will c yr fishes breathing heavily n next thing, kaput!....this is wat happened to my six line.
