my apologies again if i come across as high & mighty. not my intention. just hoping to encourage u to have a open mind to make the 2 1/2 years count for u. hv known guys who gain a lot more (not in paper certificate-wise) and hv lots of fun/make lots of good friends while there are those who went in with a tainted perception/negative attitude therefore suffer the 2 years feeling very unproductive. it will be what u try to make out of it (hope it make sense). if u want advise, well, may want to crunch on this: be humble, be helpful (esp to those weaker than u) have a positive attitude, most importantly, always flash a great smile be mindful, that some unorthodox (correct spelling??) training methods may be used to test/expand your limits & capacity(mentally&physically). instuctions that seem ridiculous or doesn't make any sense at all. it may just be a means to jot u out of your comfort zone to assess yr ability to cope and overcome difficult situations. u 'll find that platoon mates will be more willing to help/listen to you. your instructors will then be able to get to know you better, therefore recognise your abilities and give you due recognition. peace enough said. i wish u all the best. be happy. yours sincerely, manta

time to grow up and be a man. u are playing with the big boys now. believe me, you will gain much more if u go in with a positive attitude. if u are now overweight, tis the best time to lose that dead weight and gain some self confidence. spend the 2 yrs productively by trying to learn as much as u can. tats only possible if u keep an open mind. i say this from my own experience. me from old days of NS and OCS. -days of guys jumping off the top floor. in the end i find that the scolding, shouting and the rest wasnt so bad. yr capacity to take shit will increase. in civillian life, hv seen a lot of chaps (w/o NS) crumble at the slightest tough situation & constantly bitch whenever they dont get what they want. generally compared to guys of same age, mentally weaker & less mature in their thinking and ablility to cope with difficult people and situation. dun bother to keng cos the instructors/officers know yr every trick. finally, at your age, dun crap on your own country. ask yourself what have you contributed to this country. i say this becos i came from a ops unit who trains to fight and win in a war. yes, we are that serious. probably most of you guys at the NS unit level will never encounter such a environment/atmosphere in SAF. dun belittle what the rest of the guys9present & past) had done/contributed to the defence of singapore. hope i wasn't rude. my apologies if i was. cheers. manta

Hi, just got back from a long holiday(16 days in fact). made some money at blackjack table=free stay vegas . mine mainly FOWLER though. much simpler. i got a tubby (cookiemunster) and a good auto feeder for life support. ran a 16 day unassisted test run before departure to observe effects, reliability and measure required supply. good luck & happy holiday. tubby works like a charm. my compliments to cookiemunster. Better do your GCE O's/A's well, cause the UK going to discontinue the GCE soon. British education ministry just completed a major major review of the GCE system and they are going to discontinue it. Replacing it with a diploma based system with some (not academically inclined) branching out to technical (somewhat like subjects avail in poly/ite). Historical restructuring of the whole edu system. Don't want to be caught in the transition phase with a major change of exam board. Not sure they will continue to support just for o'seas thereafter. Present syllabus & scope, exam paper structure, past year series/aide memoir (not sure spelling), out the window! Was in london when the UK edu review committee/minister presented it to the parliment & media. lot's of discussion on TV. don't know whether it is reported in s'pore media. FYI. Good luck.

thks for all the help and advice. fishes in hkg tung choi st have tremendous coloration and are much more healthy than what i've seen in singapore. and i've been to most of LFS in s'pore. (work down the complied LFS list from SRC in my off days.) i guess it is due to the greater trade and traffic thereby much higher turnover. like other trades in hkg, the fish trade there is vibrant and the community of enthusiats are many times larger than here(from the large crowd). every time i visit that place(at least 8 times this year), it's pack full of people. not just the shops(lost count how many), but the whole street! though the fishes are a tad more expensive, i personally think its worth it. considering the variety, volume and range to choose from. many many thks to all the ppeople who replied. cheers. manta (novice)

hi, i couldn't resist a small three spot angel (so pretty with purple lipstick)as my flame angel was ok.. lost my elegance, hammer, orange yumas, and even turbo snails. relentless bugger. snatch at all pellets i throw in. good luck.

formula 2 pellet. blue tang, purple lip yellow angels, flame angel, damsels, clownfish fight over it. best thing, it sinks to to bottom slowly. drop bit by bit slowly and they will eat every piece before they hit the bottom. I stop feeding once any piece reaches the bottom = min left over food. cheers

It's how u make the best of your time in NS. My suggestion is to try for Oiffcer Cadet School. Leadership, communication, motivation, team building and management skills are acquired and practised with diiferent people from all walks of life are invaluable. It's better than reading and learning thru the books! U'll never get a better chance to practise it. To lead/train a group of men under your command to war/combat is a challenge that not many men can carry out successfully. It's where u seperate the boys from the men!!! Happy NS.
