  1. just re-watched the batman tcs was showing ytd on tv. not a batman fan. judging by how bad that was, i'm guessing it won't take a lot from batman begins to be "the best" amongst all the other batman movies
  2. granted, but you lost all of it when u misplaced the bag containing them. i wish im the finder of that bag.
  3. its not impossible, it happens from time to time, but it also adds tension(whether at present, or in the future) to the relationship. everything will be fine, love conquers all, love is blind, etc etc when the relationship is smooth sailing.. but during turbulent times, during stress(part n parcel of a relationship isn;t it?) u can imagine all the potential dangerous comments made in the heat of anger by either party. the comments by relatives, friends, etc might not be too friendly. love is only between 2 person they say.. not. lastly, i remember reading a report showing that in cases of the wives having a higher paper qualification than the husbands, their chances of ending in divorce is much higher than the average numbers. what im saying is, its possible, in theory its nice and romantic, but the odds are stacked against the couple. if u think you've found THAT special someone.. let nothing stand in your way.(however you have to consider that everybody in the same situation also thought in the same way before marriage, and most of them are now divorced from their "true love")
  4. actually the problem doesn't lie with whether ur hands r on the wheel or not. its more of the distraction. distraction got a lot of type. having a conversation on the phone can be mindless chit chat or discussing big business deal. so they wun know n dun see why they should give the benefit of the doubt. if it uses too much of your attention, it creates a bottleneck n u'll screw up on your driving. thats why using blue/green/pink tooth doesn;t solve the problem nor make us any less guilty.
  5. hmm this is tricky. pandas and tigers also die due to ecological reasons/ diseases/starvation, mother nature induced habitat destruction, etc too. but that does not give us the excuse to go out and hunt them for profit or sport. the vast majority of coral harvesting is for profit anyway, the harvesters do not care if you have the means or know-hows of sustaining the corals. and i get a feeling the vast majority of corals end up in hands of reefers who r sadly less than commited to sustaining the corals, unlike the serious reefers in this forum. don't flame me!! there are of cos pros to this hobby in regards to the environment. but since they r easily already available, i just felt the need to give an alternate viewpoint.
  6. theres indeed a stigma going to woodbridge(institude of mental health is the commonly used name now) but its the wrong stigma! i was there for a field visit some weeks back n its a beautiful place n not a lot diff from any other hospitals in singapore. they have outpatient counters over there and im sure you'll get the help you need from the people over there. going to a gp is probably going to get you pills to induce sleeping(short term solution) or a referal to the institute anyway. don't let a small problem snowball into a huge one just because of some instigma man. it takes a strong person to acknowledge he needs some help, n seek it. we all need some help at some point of time. cheers to a good night of sleep!
  7. if you've had look at solid data and statistics(USA statistic anyway), you would realise that prices increase, anti smoking campaigns/movements, does bring about a very significant drop in smoking rates. sure, hardcore smokers would not likely be deterred(much) by prices increase, but perhaps it can give social smokers and potential smokers a few considerations. regarding all the measures, although they would surely serve some purpose in detering, i think the main thing is for wayang. anyone who's been though army will know the importance. esp those dealing with security. you might think its stupid, pointless, counter effective, but if shit does happen 1 day, the very least they can do is to point at the measures they've adopted. imagine if yo've done nothing to wayang, when shit happens, the first to kanna will be you. people will started pointing fingers at you and ask "why didn't you do this, why ddn't you do that..?" my point is, if you're the one occupying their seats, you'd do exactly the same thing well, at least i know i will
  8. its a piece of comment written by one writer. i think the situation in china with regards to singaporean doing business there is of no surprise. it is no secret of the difficulties of doing business in china. not only with singaporean businessmen. but everybody else too. the chinese economy promises so much potential, but one has to have the ability and luck to sidestep countless pitfalls and landmines before he will be able to profit from chinese market. the increasing cautiousness and "inflexibility" of singaporean businessmen in china is not a innate nature. but could be a learned defence response. im not trying to be defensive of our singaporean in china. but that if this changing view of chinese on singaporean is really widespread and true, all it shows is that there is a co-relationship. but not causal relationship. we don't know which is the cause or which is the effect. is the singporean inefficient way of doing things the cause, and the changing views of chinese on singaporean the effect? or, is the way the chinese do business(the corruption, "guanxi", etc) caused the reaction from singaporean businessmen?
  9. I feel that some of us are really over critical of ourselves. It really is grossly unfair to our government if you try to compare ourselves(in terms of social development) with the likes of france, australia, etc. They have had a lot of time to right the wrongs. And what is good, what is bad, its all very personal. The grass is always greener on the other side isn't it? Is it better to be laid back, or better to be able to get things done as and when u need? i believe most have heard of the self fulfilling prophecy. if you go to aus or taiwan and behaves in a friendly manner towards the locals(becos u believe they r friendly), they will in return behave in a nice manner towards you. When was the last time you smiled at a bus driver or express your appreciation to the waiter in singapore? this is only a possible reason. however i do feel that the service sector in singapore could do with some overall improvement. The government is a new one(50 years is new), their priority was for survival. and they have done this well. some thinks the future i bleak, but every generation has a problem to face. the previous generation overcame their challenge to gain n maintain sovereign. to do this, they had a set of rather strict and hard line mentality and way of doing things. they suceeded in what they set out to do. today's government's challenge is, will we be able to overcome the challenge from up and coming developing nations? will we be able to create a "kind and warm society"? Most will know of maslow hierachy of needs, etc. before we advance enough to feel the need for fulfilling the higher level needs(esteem, belongingness, self actualisation, etc), everybody needs to first attain the safety needs, etc. I feel we;re now heading towards the higher needs. In the middle of the ladder. Why be so impatient n critical of the government? i'm sure no governement in the world, aus, france, whichever country that has impressed you, will be able to attain all the needs within 50 years, constrained by all the geographical barriers our small island faces. to those who thinks they know better, seen better, what would you have done if you, instead of LKY or GCK or LHL is in power? give total freedom? free speech? promote laid back lifestyle? tax free beer? tax free cigarettes? strip clubs? nice. sounds like a stress free country to live in. But, would you be confident that this country would survive long enough to enjoy the above? Or will we have to first go through a series of political assasination? a civil war first perhaps? will we be able to survive all that in today's world? if we do, at what cost?
  10. i am against opening of casino. from a social viewpoint, it is undeniable that casino brings more cons than pros(is there any?) many argue that the pros, in the form of the revenue a casino will bring makes it foolish for singapore to stay out of this industry. but does opening a casino automatically brings in the billions of dollars in revenue every year? from a solely economical consideration: opening a casino is not a sure bet of money making. and if indeed it becomes a success(a comercial one at least), the money plow into the casino from tourist will also suck money away the other tourist attractions in singapore. (you lose big at the tables, u're less likely to spend more on prada bags at orchard) so, there is definately a trade-off. its not simply money in all the way, as many people thinks. one of the safe-guard against local population(esp those who cannot afford to gamble their salaries away) is detering them from the casino. but if indeed, we refuse these ppl entrance, will there really be enough traffic to make the casino profitable? there are casinos at the north, there are casinos at the south. why would tourist suddenly decide that singapore's casino is the most attractive one and change holiday destinations? esp since if we do open a casino here, singapore being singapore, for sure our casino will not be as fuss-free as the other casinoes in the region. therefore, the social cost is very real. the economic benefit is well... at best a good potential. saying all that, i too believe that the decision has already been made. i was at institude of mental health for a study trip, and someone of significant position there let it slip that there r already ongoing coordination bet the institude n the government in preparing a "addict-help" department. so there....
  11. chris, there isn't any interviews of tests that u'll have to take in order to major in psy(nus) anymore. not to say there isn't any criteria, there is, but its very "loose" criteria such as "good results" in maths, proficient in english, etc etc. but if you can get into nus, i would think that means you've already met with the very basic criteria. the bidding system.. the bidding is for the modules you want to take, and not the course or major. but of cos if you want to accumulate enough points to ultimately grad with a major in psy, you have to meet the points requirement(points which u chalk up as you pass psy modules) then again, the introductory psychology modules are indeed red hot during bidding. you have to be prepared to dump a significant number of points to get the module. im not sure what are ntu going to be specialised in(in psy field), but for nus, the BA is basically an general overall of psychology. makes sense to me since there are overlaps in all disiplines, let alone solely in psychology. you will specialise in your choosen field(clinical, developmental, educational, etc etc) during your honours, masters, phd, etc
  12. Seems like quite a clear cut situation to me! unless you're doing something like accountancy or some of the engineering courses that are not available in nus(nus did rank higher even in engineering in the latest ranking of universities, although of course, this is not the only factor when making your choice), i would choose nus over ntu. though this brave statement i agree(ok this statement is flawed n over generalised. spoken out of loyalty) psychology in nus is within the department of psychology and social work. that does not make it any less specialised in psychology, if thats what u're worried about. you do get a ba in arts n social sciences(with mention that u majored in psy). but i think its not what they print on your cert that you should be concerned about. im not sure what your friends meant by it not being recoignised overseas(in terms of postgrad studies?) but it made little sense to me that our psy degree is not recognised but yet-to-be-formed ntu's psy degree will be? and your worries about admission into the psychology programme in nus.. if you managed to get into nus arts faculty, you WILL be able to major psychology. its just a matter of your choice. there's no "cut off point" whereby they set quota on the number of psychology majors, as far as im aware of. if you do intend to take psychology, you have to be prepared to take at least honours also, cos your options in this field will be quite limited should you grad with only a BA.
  13. left.. right..right..left..left..left.. hahahaha.
  14. i gave up cos the chiller was too noisy n causing me to lose sleep.
  15. dude, i suppose this is my last response, cos we seem to be going round and round. i have read all your so called "point by point" responses, hardly anyone of them seem to make any sense. nor do they answer any of the questions you are trying to answer. way back in school, our beloved teachers/tutors would call them "out of point, pls re-do) to tell you the truth, that wasn't a apology. i simply don't feel you deserve one. not after all the childish and offending words u threw at me cos i questioned your attitude as a "singaporean". When GCT came up with the term "quitter", u didn't see the public or LKY or whoever else going.. (ah what were the terms u used on me? i'm too lazy to copy and paste again.) when your actions suggest that there is a problem with your attitude on a national scale(abeit on football related issues, and don't say football and politics has no relation, everybody who is matured enough know there are, thats why LHL himself has to bask in the glory a bit at takashimaya) anybody has the right to question your loyalty. no one has the right to say you are not a singaporean of cos(i nv did, if you read carefully). it could have been a mature discussion on football/politics/whathaveyou. but it sunk into a ladies catfight right after u decide to do it your way for example:" did i say you are really really stupid? no i did not" (HAHA, i haven;t had this sort of attacks since what? primary school days?) i will stop now. darren, out.
  16. nah i think we will have more to fear from terrorist than ww3 or 4. even if there is a ww3, i dun supposed the deathtoll will be anything close to ww1 or 2 figures, considering the way war was fought back then(close combat n mass chionging into enemy's fire) sure we have our nuclear warheads n etc. but why would u want to flatten a city and destroy everything in it... when ur intention is to take over the place n reap benefits from it?(thats what wars r all about right?) it is possible we'll die from some virus though. all in all, we have to remember that the world was a much more screwed up place back in the old days, compared to today. like terryansimon mentioned. so, lets all enjoy this beautiful world that we live in today, while it last
  17. now now.. your opinion is that the win is a fluke. that the singapore soccer team sux. my opinion is that i don't agree with your opinion(am i allowed to?) and that urs is a very pessimist and and can i say unpatriotic one. not supporting the local team is fine. that is hardy unpatriotic imho. but to go "ah you see.. they're sure to fail.. mark my words... they're rubbish(etc...)" to me.. is just shameful, as a singaporean. well i'm not sure what are you trying to prove by providing the useful facts about where you live, that you drive a lexus, what cushions you use, etc... but the fact that u used terms like(just a quick sweep of your posts) "GROW UP", "STUPID", "INSULT", "talk ###### ", "REALLY STUPID", "REALLY REALLY STUPID ", "not mature enough", "Infantile", "moronic".... suggest to me, and perhaps everybody else reading this.. that you need the first advice you gave me "grow up" a little more than myself. ps: some of the terms are in caps because i copied and paste. im actually quite surprised at your outburst, to say the truth. if i greatly offended you by questioning your national identity, i apologise. was it an old wound that i reopened thus the reaction? perhaps this is not the first time u've been accused of such... but anyway.... i am truely sorry to most others, on my personal opinion of the cup victory, we have to remember that before the tournamant started, we were the ones who were supposed to be a team undergoing rebuilding. thus we were not given much of a chance. thailand, indonesia, or whichever signaled their intentions to win the trophy, suggesting confidence in the squad they have. its quite surprising that "thailand is in the process of rebuilding, therefore we managed to win the cup" is brought up as one of the possible reasons. like someone mentioned, a win is a win. some teams play ugly football and win championships(the old arsenal perhaps?) some team plays beautiful attacking football and ends up in relegation dogfights on several occasions(newcastle perhaps). my point is, how does that matter? its not our fault that the other teams are weakened. (are ours not considered a weak team?) its not our fault when opposition's strikers left their shooting boots at home, or defence kayu. perhaps they don't play well because of the pressure the spore team is putting on them by the tight marking or hard running? i've actually been quite impressed with agu. not so much with his goal scoring(he did score quite a bagful) but with his ball holding ability. he reminds me of a certain alan shearer!(thats very exagerating but u get the point) i struggle to remember any other strikers in the entire tiger cup tournament holding the ball up and being clever with the ball like he did in the entire tournament. i dont see much wrong with greece's man-marking system too. they have their gameplan, stuck to it, n if it succeed, good for them. well im sure the greece ppl were not complaining when they lifted euro cup. ps: is sabatini the lady with the really thick eye brows?
  18. i've seen too many of your type. they usually dream of the day they can pack their bags and leave for australia. they usually sit in their comfy armchairs and shoot off about the government and the coe, while watching espn and hbo with the air-con on. and they usually support chelsea. (for now)
  19. whats this about? the fans have been let down for more than a decade and finally we have another chance to use this victory as a platform towards greater things for local football. no doubt the fans, media, just about everybody else has been a critic of the local football( national team and s-league) probably from the time we left the m-league to the most recent tiger cup victory. the difference between the criticism they(us, if you include me) shot at the lions and s-league and detractors like yours, is that ours are constructve criticism while yours smells of nothing but the desire to see singapore soccer fail. i really couldn't find anything constructive in your comments after reading it 3 times over. what exactly is the intention when u decide to post? so that if we really do not win anything for the next 10 years, we'll think back to what you said and go "woah, this forwards, hes got amazing foresight"? you call yourself a realistic singaporean. i can comprehend the "realistic" part(perhaps). but i struggle to relate you with the word "singaporean". peace to all, darren.
  20. the last i heard, you don't even need to pass IPPT and SOC to POP anymore. Maybe MINDEF is paving the way for a female friendly army experience... Sewing classes next?
  21. i think there's free shuttle bus from bedok mrt car/tai pickup point? to marina cove i think. only on weekdays though
  22. the celebrities r not to be blamed. they have a job to do and popularity points to be earned. the nkf r not to be blamed. their objective is to gather as much funds as possible and they're doing that.(their only fault is them being too successful) the tv stations r not to be blamed cos their objective is to increase viewership figures. so who is to be blamed for all this madness? its us, the viewers/donors actually. they will not stop using this kind of tactic as long as the viewership and donation figures keep rising. the fact that they r achieving their targets year after year simply means that they have adopted a strategy that works. sad but true. given this trend, if u're them, will you dare to change the format to just singing and dancing. take away all those lucky draws and risk(very likely) viewership/donations plunge to 10% of what it was? lets just face it, people. as long as the money continues to pour in, they're not going to be bothered about the minority(the success of their campaign means that we are the minority). its simple economics really, they have to give the consumers what the consumers demand.
  23. thats freddie mercury of Queen died of AIDS
  24. it means she's telling u the next 4d 1st price number is 4608
