Hi,

I'm also working on external overflow but is a cheap-man's version :P

Can I know how do you control the waterflow for both directions? i.e. siphoning down to sump and pumping water back to main tank. Because water flow rate may varies a bit for many reasons so there should be some kind of machanism to cut-off/reduce flow rate to balance up so that water will not flow out of sump or main tank if one end is flowing a bit too fast for a long while before you check.

Thanks. :)

The flow from the OFB will be based on the flow into the main tank. Faster the flow into main tank, faster it will be siphoned out. AUTOMATIC :eyebrow:

If you just use a siphon without the over flow box than you will eventually have problems. If either one fails you will overflow with anger!!!

hi Ian,

I am trying to design "double-decker" tanks, not sure how feasible..

understand that if pump fails the overflow box will prevent water from being siphoned all the way down.

but if the OFB fails, wouldn't the pump keep pushing water up until the top tank over flows. I was thinking of positioning the powerhead nearer to the top of the surface such that once water falls below a certain level, PH can only draw air...?? any comments ?

Hi!

"double-decker" tanks, you mean 2 tanks and one sump or 1 tank and 1 sump?

EG. 2 2ft flower horn tanks and one stand.

Top tank for display and bottom for sump?

Regarding overflow main tank;

Thats why in the sump the last section is for the return pump.

In the last section the water level is the lowest compared to the other sections. Few inches above the the return pump.

So when the siphon stops, no more water is pumped into the sump. The return pump will force only what water is left in the last section. which is not much. And after that your return pump will be ###### air!

So to prevent a burn out. Place a float switch that will stop the pump when water level in the last section goes to low. :)

"was thinking of positioning the powerhead nearer to the top of the surface such that once water falls below a certain level, PH can only draw air...?? any comments ?"

I hope i answered your question. :D If not let me know.

also, is there a special use for the durso standpipe? why not just a vertical pipe to raise the water level and the excess flow down..abit blur... thanks

Remember the durso standpipe is only to stop the noise. You can still ajust the water level with the durso standpipe. Not a problem.

hi Ian, its actually a 22 gal on top and a 15 gal below.

top is already a nano reef and bottom is currently empty. but instead of bottom as a sump, thinking of also keeping some non-reef-safe fishes..

trying to only utilise one chiller and 1 skimmer, so want to hook them together..such that both tanks can share resources.. (hence double decker)

so a bit of headache from thinking how to make sure toptank overflows down to bottom tank and PH in bottom tank pump up again to top tank...??? and also need to think how not to create a mini niagara falls in HDB flat...

you think your design works for me ? thanks in advance bro !
