New To Marine Nano Tank

Recommended Posts

  • SRC Member

Hi

I'm interested in getting a new hobby for a marine tank. Read quite a few articles. Trying to get a better understanding.

I decide to take up small tank for a start in case i failed miserably. Have a thinking of getting either a Dymax iQ5 or <2ft tank.

I use to keep freshwaters and i do know a few for tank cycling etc etc etc.

Please guide me through to get me started in this new hobby.

I'm getting my set up at Qian Hu as I'm not sure about any other places in West area for Marine set ups. C328 n polyart r limited. I dont even see Marine fish accept for accesories. I will be buying most of my things from Qian Hu. And I will be using NSW temporary at the moment as I'm still learning and not too sure about Salt Mix.

My Planning For an iQ5

iQ5 set(Obviously)

Filter Media(Sponge, AC, Ceremic Bio Home)

Live Rock

Live Sand

Sea Water(NSW?)

Skimmer?

Wave Maker?

Is that all? other than test kit? do i still need a anti chlorine/chloromine (seachem prime) if i use NSW?

My Planing for <2ft set up.

Currently no idea how to set it up.

My altenative choice for a <2ft tank set up is becoz, i dont find Dymax iQ5 is worth for the price. I can eventually get a 2ft tank which cost less than $50, a cheap HOB filter, lighting. which will cost me maybe less than $100??

Pls guide me. Im not sure what to get.

Hi bro, another way is to buy 2nd hand nano tank and equipments from buy-sell forum here.

You would need good lighting. QH, price wise not really the best.

For starting, this website provides useful info:

http://www.nano-reef.com/articles/?article=1

I started my first reef tank 6 months ago.

I used live rock, live sands, and Nutrafin cycle bacteria (so, I didn't need to cycle my tank).

Marine live stocks mostly available at pasir Ris farm way, lim chu kang.

If you are living in central area, there is Sea Life at Balestier near Quality Hotel, there is Aquamarine around Tai Seng and Wong Loy Kee at China Town.

Hi John, C328 & polyart do not stock much marine life stocks. But do check out the hardware for your tank. They indeed price their items lower than many other places.

On the other side of the AYE is MarineLife, helmed by the experienced, helpful and friendly Henry. You will find excellent livestock there.

As you are going all the way to QH, you may also want to travel just a bit further to check out Coralfarm and LCK for livestock too.

Otherwise, the buy/sell thread here is vibrant. You just have to constantly browse to look for value. Some patience required though.

I got some of my items here at good prices. It's also a good way to get to know reefers here.

You may also drop by the Pasir Ris farms here at the east.

Cheers.

The best place to go in the west for concrete advise would be Marine Life at Hong Leong Gardens. There's a huge difference in shops specialized in marine equipment and marine livestock compared to shops which sell general equipment.

Always something more important than fish.

Hi bro, if you do not intend to install a chiller, get one or two fans.

Cheapest dymax fan at polyart.

I manage to keep my nano tank temperature around 28c using fan, but I put it on a spot in my house that is coolest and has good ventilation (this saves electricity).

On top if this you will need DI water for evaporation top up.

A more economical option to have DI water:

* get a TDS meter (bought from eBay)

* buy DI resin (I bought mine from MadPetz, one of our sponsors here)

* carbon

* a submersible pump or an internal filter

You can either use a big pail and put the submersible pump, some carbon, some DI resin and run the pump overnight or until TDS reads zero, or put carbon and DI resin in an internal filter and run the pail of water until TDS reads zero.

Can i use NSW instead of doing DI water? Economically expensive. but i find it easier..

Please take note that NSW will be for your water change only.

For evaporation top ups, you still have to add DI water.

A cheap source of DI water can be found at Fairprice. 'Life' brand distilled water. 2 x 1.5L bottles for 95 cents.

TDS meter is for reading Total Disslove Solids. However it is not necessary for a nano tank. If you are only starting up a nano IQ5 there is alot of optional equipment which you may not need at the start. Constant small water change with a nano tank will do a good job of maintaining the overall water parameter.

Try to go for the biggest tank which you can afford, if not you will soon find yourself overstocking your tank very soon. For some good advice and nice nano tank setup, maybe you can visit madpetz to have a look at the nano tank in their showroom.

More reading about setting up a tank can also be found here ; http://www.sgreefclub.com/forum/page/index.html/_/marine-aquarium-setting-up-resources/

Happy Reefing :)
