Osram T5 HO

And then, i came across this Osram T5 HO FQ-24W / 860  Daylight....

a further check on the osram website showed that it is a 6,000K lighting....

http://www.osram.com/products/general/fluorescent/fq.html

Compare the following stats:

PL: Dulux L 55W, 4550 lumens for daylight colour

T5 HO: FQ54W, 4050 lumens for daylight colour

Ignoring the difference of 1 W, statistically speaking, seems like the 55W PL light will throw out more lumens than the T5 HO. Yet everyone in the forum here seems to suggest that T5 is better than PL. Why is that so?

Hi sgbaby,

comparing T5HO & PL without reflector, PL give out more output.

However, due to the slim design of the T5 tube, by using a good reflector, it is able to give out abt double the output. ex, 4050 x 2 = 8100 lumens.

Another reason for using T5 is because one is able to squeeze in more tubes of T5 than PL...means more watts within a given space.

Lastly, its the heat issue. T5 give out less heat & more power efficient.

No one has tested the PL with a reflector designed for it. So, I'm not sure if it will give out more intensity.

Cheers!

Wei :)

I fully agree with Sgbady.

T5 generate less heat hence less energy loss.

Its slim design allows more tube to be installes in the same casing.

Osram do not produce blue tube under its brand. But u can only get Narva Blue Plus for 2ft.

No one had tried to overdrive a 24W T5 except those using the Icecap on 54W tubes.

Why don't u try it out using a 39W eballast on the 24W tube & see the result. I believe a lot of guys here would like to know the result too!

I'm using the elbiru 36-40watts eballast for driving 2x 24watts T5, its perfectly fine to use it in the sense that it wont explode :P

However the lifespan of the tube will be shorten by the rapid start ballast. Most T5 tubes requires warm start ballast where the electrodes will be heated for 2 secs before ignition, that will prevent the ends of the tube from becoming black. I believe this is because of the thinner electrode in the T5 where a sudden surge in current will weaken it overtime.

I believe tubes under this elbiru ballast should be able to function without significant damage for abt 4-5months at most and since it only cost $9 each .. I can afford to replace them more frequently. ;)

so some of you are already using this tube for your main tank?

about teh endcap and wire from sinster, is the endcap $0.80 each and single core wire is recommended?

Anyone using the Osram T5 eballast from Kisptrading?

buying a few eballast to have more control on the tubes also expensive :P:D

Bro,

The .80 ct type is not waterproof.Good if your tube in enclosure.

Not recomend if your are using open concept.

Osram T5 eballast from any outlets no different. As long as the modelis the same and the price is right.

Market price now is S$48 per piece with delivery.

Thanks bro sherman

the tubes will be in a hood or at least protect by acrylic if the 80cents endcap is used.

so sinster also selling 39W Osram eballast at $48?...if true then very good :D

don't know why single core is used for this T5 endcap.... easy break...

looks like can go ahead with T5 plus MH 150W DE project... still need to get sheetmetal maker to custom make a hood ... like the reborn show tank upstair

Bro Yus75,

You can put in as many as you can squeeze in the casing but you must take care of the heat dissipated.

i tink i saw PR carrying them...

but i tink any blue t5 tubes shld do as well...

considering the coralblue 20kk that Glare is selling? looks cheap n nice :P

Are you overdriving your T5s? 36-40W ballasts firing up a 24W tube!?

if it's 1Xelbiru then it's underdriving.... if 2Xelbiru then it's overdriving too much :pinch:

btw, some updates of using the Osram 860....

significant growth on my ulva (sea lettuce), caulerpa n some string like algae... :)

the string like algae is like fishing line now quite populated with it... anyone can identify it n whether it has any beneficial use in refuguim?

overall, i shld deem it suitable for macros ;)

anyone else got any feedbacks from their try-out on osram 860? :D

Sounds like chaetomorpha (not sure of spelling)?..short form is chaeto...

Anyway..a 36W ballasts supplying current to a 24W tube...wun it kind of shorten the bulb lifespan or even cause it to fuse?

If you use a normal eballast, you will still shorten the life of the tube because it lacks of a warm start function. Each tube cost only $9, its very affordable even to replace them every 4-5months
