Low KH issue

Hi brothers,

Need some advices on my low KH issue.

I have just tested my parameters today:

KH = 6.1, pH = 8, mg = 1300, ca = 400

I have been doing manual dosing using Brightwell Alkalin 8.3 either once or twice per week but I can never get my KH to 8. I am not keeping SPS, just softies and LPS.

1. Should I worry about KH 6.1?

2. How can I raise the KH? I heard of baking soda too but not sure how much to add.

Thanks!

Regards,
Jeff

The difference between baking soda & those commercial 2 parts, baking soda u must use at least food grade or better. Using baking soda is cheaper compared to getting a commercial 2 parts to increase & maintain KH but, dosing will be more compared to commercial products because we are using hands or pumps to get baking soda to dissolve in DI water which cannot be compared to industrial strenghts stirrers that can get more to dissolve & as a result, more concentrate to the point of saturation, dosage lesser. And, u should use an additive to raise your KH, this one u are using now, only increases your pH, not KH. U can try those powder forms which are cheaper compared to liquid & once u get your preferred KH, maintain using liquid form for KH or continue the powder form. And why i say powder form cheaper is because every cents u paid, is for the powders that work & not for water that comes in liquid forms.

+1 on this.

You can try dosing kalkwasser, it helps to raise your KH and CAL. Cheap and effective method, but take note that it raises your pH as well.

Thanks all for the advices. What about putting coral chips in refugium. Does it also help?

Using coral chips is an old school method and I don't think it is as efficient as dosing.

Besides, it also traps dirt leading to increase in nitrates.

Dose KH to raise it to the require parameter of around 8 - 10 dkh.

But remember to dose slowly. Not more then 0.5 dkh per day.

I am dosing KH using seachem reef carbonate, liquid form. I love seachem products as i have been using since running with freshwater planted tanks and have been successful with their products. But just like what reeffish has said, we are also paying for the liquid of these products.

Tank: 3.5ft x 2ft x 1.5ft, 12mm

Sump: 3ft

Skimmer: Bubble Magus Curve 7

Lightings: Maxspect 15000k

Return Pump: Eheim 1252

Wavemaker: Jebao WP25, Jebao RW-8
