Quite difficult to find a U pipe in clear PVC. At most you can get 2 long bend 90 degree using JIS or DIN standard. Join both ends together to get a U. DIN standard only +GF+ carry them and JIS standard, Hai Cheong may have them. Either JIS or DIN both comes in metric dimensions only, whereas the ASTM and BS standard comes in imperial units.

See picture for the long bend.

Can get PVC clear pipe then bend it, very easy.

Instruction: fill pipe with gravel or sand........seal both ends..........heat pipe with blow torch, don't let flame blister exterior.........heat till soft(about 5min).....try bending, if still too hard, heat some more(don't ngeh ngeh lai!) ....once form, dip in tap water....done.

I have tried this with normal PVC pipe, not sure will clearness be there after bend, quite fun especially when soft, feels like your arm without bone inside, heehee!

For the interest of any reefers wondering what they stand for:

DIN or ISO = Int"l Std of Org

JIS = Japan Inst of Std

BS = British Standard

ASTM = American Std of Manufacturing

:off:

but DIN & ISO are different

DIN - Deutsches Institut fur Normung (German Institute for standardisation)

ISO - International Organisation for Standardisation (Geneva, Switzerland)

JIS - Japan Industrial Standards (Japan Standards Association)

ASTM - American Society For Testing and Materials

mismarine, Hai Cheong has 2 shops, 1 at Eunos and the other at Kallang.

Basically there are 3 types of piping standards in use in Singapore, the DIN, JIS or ASTM (some people also call them schedule 80, schedule 40). So, just decide what your existing system is using to be compatible. If you using for new start up, then its a matter of 'taste' which to choose. However, there are pros and cons to each type of standard.

Me looking for acrylic U pipe to replace Ian's iBox. About 1" dia.

Sorry just tagging along

Clear u tube will have algae growth. Allot of guys in RC change to PVC cause of this. The algae will also reduce the flow rate. I've seen an overflow box by life reef personally at a shop in Dubai and he has the same complaint about the algae. Told him about using PVC and they are using it now without any more problems.

Just my 2 cents. :)

then which type of standard is normally use...???

today will be going down to Hai Cheong at afternoon.. do they accept nets there..???? if not I better go draw enough cash...

Only cash. Best to know what you want to buy then call up and ask for price then bring sufficient cash :P

while we're at this, weisoon, probably you can talk more abt the pro and con of the different standards we other pple here can have more understanding :P

I know it is possible to convert to different standard by using the FIP true union ball valve by changing the end caps (not sure if I got the name correctly). Eg one end is DIN and the other end ASTM etc.

Hai Cheong normally sells the ASTM sch80 pipings and fittings and some sch40 clear pipes. They also has JIS pipings and fittings. Like I mentioned, depends on what one fancy. The sch80 pipings are meant for industrial use where they run compression in the system upto a few hundred psi and they have very thick walls. Sch40 wall thickness is much thinner but they are clear, and may attract algae in the long run. However some sections with clear pipes is better for looking at what's going through the pipe and also indication when its time to do some cleaning provided you can dismount the pipes.

The DIN standards think only +GF+ carry them other than the other company call Glenweld. Their piping wall thickness are very reasonable and lower pressure ratings but still rated for industrial compression use. There some things that the DIN has and the sch80 does not have, in other words DIN has more choices.

Points to consider:

1. What pressure rating is a reef tank going to run? maybe max 10m head pressure? If you do not need the very thick wall thickness to counter the high pressure, then maybe can consider the thinner walled DIN standard.

2. Industrial systems has very powerful pumps to counter the small clear space of the pipe reason being that most of the area is taken up by the wall thickness. Small clear through is not their concern. But in our system it is. We are more worried about head loss and the performance of most of out pumps if they can push as much water through as possible.

3. As above on head loss, example if one need to turn the pipe direction 90 degrees, the sch80 elbow has a very sharp turn and if you feel the interior, there are sharp edges. The DIN's elbow has a smoother transition and better still, if you get the long bend, then there is no sudden turn at all. This results in less head loss than the sch80 elbows.

4. Sch80 fittings are more easily available as they cater to the more local industrial users. The DIN is also easily available but certain special parts like the long bend sometimes they run out of stock and need to ordr. Reason being not many industrial users need them because as in point 2, the industrial users are not worried about tight bends due to their strong pumps.

Think more than enough talk already.......

The Sch80 and the DIN fittings/pipes prices are nearly same. Only one that is cheap are the JIS standards.

Forgot to mention, the JIS standards are cheap and they have a reason to be so. The pipe/fitting walls are very brittle and they crack easily. But then again, many reefers are using them with no problem. Like I said, matter of personal comfort level and budget. If one can accept the level of sfaety, then go JIS. If one wants more safety and has more budget, then personally I will go the DIN standard. Sch80 to me its over kill.

As a comparison from my receipts

Sch80 1" 90 degree elbow about $1.65

DIN +GF+ d40 90 degree elbow about $2.12

But bear in mind 1" is not equal to d40

Equivalent size to d40 is 1.25" sch80 which may end up to same price.
