tipping at restaurants

Recently I went to a restaurant with a large group. Because we were a large group we automatically had 18% tip added to our bills. We received absoluetly HORRIBLE service from the waiters. Nobody feels that the waiters deserved such a large tip.

Are you required to pay the tip at a resteraunt when eating with a large group? The whole purpose behind a tip is that as the quality of theservice increases so does the amount of the tip. A fixed tip removes any motivation for the waiters to give you good service.

Genesis 1:20

And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that has life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven. And God created great whales, and every living creature that moves, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

They do that in the US for a group of 8 or more whether you get good or bad service as the waiters' income depends on service, in some restaurants, esp chinese ones, they are not paid a salary.

I am really surprise they do this in Asia, usually is 10% only.

it's actually called service charge... 10% most of the time... but might increase to 14% on new year's eve lets say when the restaurant opens past midnight... this 14% is not a confirmed figure but most restaurants have this increase in 4% <_<

about the increase in 8%, i have no idea.. maybe u could state where u went to eat?

I used to travel to SF quite frequently previously.

Initially when I first went there I often forgets to tip, due to the fact that we dun practice it here in Singapore, I never once encountered bad service. ;)

However, after a few trips I started tipping and even became friends with the wait staffs.

I once asked them why they did not insist for a tip from me in the begining since tipping is compulsory in SF.

Guess what they said????

SF wait staff: "Asians never tip. Even if they tip, they are bad tippers, so why loose your sleep over it?" <_<
