I read in a Marine Book somewhere that for this type of sponge, you have to make sure that debri etc. does not get trap onto the sponge. If it does, gently brush it away.

In your case, there is ALOT Of particles stuck on the sponge. Try ###### it away with a thin rubber tube. The condition of the sponge should improve, however no promises.

Just my 2 cents.
