hammy
the authorities seem to claim that it is below 50ppm which is still great for drinking but not that great for reefing . different area have different nitrate level. SRC Member framerunner Posted October 10, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted October 10, 2005 I did a test on the tap water to measure the nitrate level. Using salifert test kit. The one on the right is directly from the tap, the one on the left is taken from my new toy (DI Unit)

SRC Member zeotz Posted October 11, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted October 11, 2005 that looks like 25ppm - 50ppm to me. thanks for sharing bros, its good info for unknowing reefers like me who thinks our tap water is good enough untreated. Makes me also wunder what long term effects high nitrate drinking water has on humans.

SRC Member May&Bruce Posted October 16, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted October 16, 2005 I had our tap water tested by an analytical laboratory and the nitrate was less than 5 mg/L. clarkiiclown04
May&Bruce, does it cost anything to get water tested by an expert? Would like to test the water in my area. Thanks.
SRC Member May&Bruce Posted October 16, 2005 SRC Member Share Posted October 16, 2005 Clarkiiclown, yeah it can cost 40-70 per element that you test for. I tested my tap water for chlorine, phosphate, silicate and nitrate and I tested my reef tank water for nitrate, phosphate, iodide, chlorine, calcium, silicate, ammonium, nitrite, pH. Cost me about S$580 for all the tests. It's a lot of money and I don't want to do it again, but given I had just spent several thousands setting up a 5 foot reef tank, i wanted to make sure all the parameters were good after 3 months. I just didn't trust the test kits from the LFS. The nitrate test kit I was using was telling me that my lightly stocked reef tank had 25-30 mg/L of nitrate - the lab told me it was 4.71 mg/L. We use this lab during my work - they are international and reliable: ALS Technichem (S) Pte Ltd 14 Little Rd, #07-01 Tel: 6283 9268 Quote Real reefs don't have glass bottoms....(...think about it)
